MORE THAN WORDS (2017-20) was an Erasmus+ collaboration across 6 countries, leading to a poetic, provocative film exploring what it means to be an outsider in Europe. Blending theatre, clowning, music and dance it pushed the boundaries of storytelling.

In 2017 ORIGINS Festival closed with an unforgettable performance from Inuk throat-singer Tanya Tagaq who reimagined Robert Flaherty’s problematic 1922 film Nanook of the North with a live improvised soundtrack, a breathtaking act of cultural reappropriation. #BorderCrossings30

Brian Woolland’s DOUBLE TONGUE was a gripping exploration of identity, sexuality, and language, set in post-Cold War Hungary.
Like so much of our work, it asked: how do we define ourselves when the ground beneath us is constantly shifting?

#BorderCrossings30 Number 4: TOUFANN (1999). The late Dev Virahsawmy was a wonderful writer, whose adaptations of Shakespeare gave him space to affirm the power of the emerging Mauritian language. TOUFANN was (very) loosely based on THE TEMPEST, & the complexities of Mauritian politics & identities.

Border Crossings' only Shakespeare, commissioned by the British Council in Mauritius, toured the Indian Ocean & Zimbabwe, as well as UK venues. We experimented with the cross-gender casting used in Asian forms, exploring gender & sexuality.
