Join me for a walk around Boxgrove Priory in West Sussex. Founded in around 1107 and dissolved by (you guessed it) Henry VIII in 1537.
Incidentally, an archaeological dig close to the priory found the oldest hominin remains in Britain: Homo Heidelbergensis

Here's a less typical #Boxgrove handaxe than the ones we usually share. Not as beautiful as some but no less skill in its manufacture. It's had a long life and has been sharpened many times. With this one the butt is lovely and symmetrical but the tip is reduced, lumpy and jagged

For #FlintFriday a handaxe from the waterhole site at #Boxgrove. Looking forward to talking about the #BoxgrovePeople who made these effective tools half a million years ago with @hack_history's @WW2girl1944 and @churchill_alex this evening.

A biface from the western #Boxgrove palaeolandscape 480,000 years old.
This one was eroded out by meltwater during the last cold stage and recovered from valley gravel at West Stoke in the 19th Century.

So happy to see Refit Group 49 make the front cover of British Archaeology.

Inside there's an article by me on the #Boxgrove Horse Butchery Site inside as well as another by @ArchSouthEast colleague Jon Sygrave on our Whitehawk causewayed enclosure project.

I loved John Sibbick's #Boxgrove reconstruction art for @NatGeo. I got to nerd-out as Sibbick had previously produced the original cover art for Warhammer 40K & @ian_livingstone's Fighting Fantasy, before working on our site. https://pin.it/1bcJezX

A handaxe from the #Boxgrove hominin locality caught ploughing it's own course through a swirl of mixed Ice Age pond sediments.

Half a million years old & perfectly sharp despite the churning.

Have to love a leaf trowel for bringing out the detail

Ok so I have spent the past couple of days with my head parked in the north ravine at #LaCotte. Now I’m taking my head back a further 300k years to #Boxgrove for @PGarciaMedrano and the #WEAP workshop!!
