Join me for a walk around Boxgrove Priory in West Sussex. Founded in around 1107 and dissolved by (you guessed it) Henry VIII in 1537.
Incidentally, an archaeological dig close to the priory found the oldest hominin remains in Britain: Homo Heidelbergensis

Here's a less typical #Boxgrove handaxe than the ones we usually share. Not as beautiful as some but no less skill in its manufacture. It's had a long life and has been sharpened many times. With this one the butt is lovely and symmetrical but the tip is reduced, lumpy and jagged

For #FlintFriday a handaxe from the waterhole site at #Boxgrove. Looking forward to talking about the #BoxgrovePeople who made these effective tools half a million years ago with @hack_history's @WW2girl1944 and @churchill_alex this evening.

A biface from the western #Boxgrove palaeolandscape 480,000 years old.
This one was eroded out by meltwater during the last cold stage and recovered from valley gravel at West Stoke in the 19th Century.
