Carving would remain a passion throughout Brâncuşi's career as a sculptor, even when his contemporaries turned more and more to casting their work. Brâncuşi’s interest was in form and, in particular, how form interacted with space. His sculptures found inspiration in non-Western cultures and his native Romanian folk art. He often made multiple versions of the same theme over many years, constantly refining and simplifying his forms. “Sleeping Muse” was one of these re-used themes; the first one was carved of marble in 1907, followed by four bronze casts (of which the Art Institute of Chicago’s is one) in 1910. The egg-shaped head was presented on its side without a base, which makes the form mimic a sleeping head on a pillow (without the pillow). The facial details are very simple, just clean geometric lines, and the heads (both in marble and brass) are graceful and elegant in form – the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which owns another one of the brass heads, describes it as “the essence of languor”. The model for the original head was Baroness Renée Irana Franchon, a poet and novelist who was one of the artist’s favorite models. Brâncuşi’s pieces became more and more abstract as he constantly pared down what he saw to a more non-literal representation. His radical vision changed the direction of modern sculpture and art to embrace Minimalism and Conceptualism.
