My tribute to Rex for now. A sketched profile shot of Rex on the left and a full body shot sitting on the ground leaning towards his profile. The sitting one is dressed as a Watteau shepherd from the Lancret Affair party at Stephen Tennant's home, Wilsford. He's in full makeup, his tunic has roses on it, breeches to his knees, and stockings. Ribbons adorn his neck. It shows the serious side of normally-dressed artist Rex that juxtaposes the side he shows when he's with Stephen Tennant and the makeup palettes come out as he suddenly exudes confidence and a willingness to give himself over to fully participating in dressing up and posing. Friend Edith Olivier said he was very hyperactive when talking about things he loved, like old architecture, while others say he was a quiet wallflower that had a good sense of humor. His humor could also be dark.
The "Tent Room" at Port Lympne commissioned by Phillip Sassoon, brother of war poet Siegfried Sassoon. It shows an old world cityscape on the left side with tent poles leading to the ceiling on all four walls, with the curvy ceiling painted to look like a blue and white striped tent. There is faux statues painted to look like they are real.
"Kingdom By The Sea" mural in the dining room at Plas Newydd, Wales. He was in love with the daughter of the person who commissioned it. It depicts a vast seascape with docks, and a 1700s-style city to the left with various boats. Rex's humor is shown in the trident and crown leaning against a pillar in the foreground as if Neptune rose out of the water. The trees on the right are said to represent his love for daughter Caroline Paget, the healthy tree representing her, while the dying tree is Rex. To the left, is a wall which shows a long pillared corridor and at the end is Rex sweeping up rose petals, again alluding to his love. On the rightside wall, is another hallway with two pugs and on the edge of a step is balanced a smoking cigarette, awaiting Rex's hopeful return.
The Whistler Room at Mottisfont Abbey. The color of the room changes depending on the light, being mostly white "fixtures" with pink shadows. Rex was a master of trompe l’oeil, fooling the eye into thinking there's plasterwork on the walls. Gold mirrors decorate the room to give a hint of a rococo look. I can't describe the style of this place other than whimsical. Left photo: He painted the curtains that are draped above the door, as well as the latticework on the ceiling and all the star-shaped details and scrollwork. Center Photo: A smoking brazier with things that the family enjoyed like a mandolin, books, and other things. Bottom Photo: Rex was painting the curtains in this room when he heard that Britain was at war with Germany (WWII). He joined the Welsh Guards and before he left, he painted a paint pot with a paintbrush in it, high on top of a pillar, intending to paint it out if he ever came back. He died, and the paintbrush still waits for its owner to return.
June 24 was Rex Whistlers birthday. I thought that I should celebrate in some way. Art for a fellow artist.
His art & murals always displayed his humor.During WWII, he freed his tank from barbed wire & was struck when warning another tank. Died too soon, pining for love. 1/2
