New to the badger family is the Caucasian Badger (Meles canescens). Originally thought to be a subspecies of Meles meles, it is now classified as it's own species as of 2013. It is native to western Asia and some of the Mediterranean Islands.. Only small difference in the Caucasian and European badger are in size and color, Caucasian Badgers being slightly smaller and having a yellow\brown color to it

As of 2013, the Caucasian Badger became recognized as it's own species of badger (Meles canescens). The species broke away from Meles meles between 2.37 million years ago to 450,000 years ago.
