Graphical abstract: We investigated the factors influencing water deer occupancy and their activity patterns during the summer season. The results suggested that occupancy probability decreased with increasing NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), indicating a preference for grasslands and shrublands. Additionally, water deer exhibited distinct crepuscular activity patterns.
