“It meant nothing.” Behind her, the mattress shifts. For a moment, Caitlyn waits for the argument. A fight. Something. Instead… “Okay.” Footsteps cross the room. Caitlyn keeps her eyes fixed ahead. By the time she turns around, Vi is already gone. Say it again, she tells herself. It meant nothing. Maybe if I say it enough times… it will become true.
