It’s the smell she notices first. It’s not wholly unfamiliar—Vi knows what things that burn smell like—but it isn’t as acrid as she’d have thought, has almost a fragrance to it that lingers and sits heavy in the air. Next she sees the flickers of light, the way the flames grow as they are fed, grow further as they consume greedy, greedy, greedy beyond belief, then as they wane with their hunger unending into the crisp soft flakes of ash that float, flutter, and fall. Then she sees Caitlyn. Caitlyn in the middle of the courtyard, back ramrod straight, her coat a set of crisp lines against the light, the edges of her face all that Vi can see, lit with lonely orange. In Caitlyn’s left hand is a stack of papers, in her right, a single sheet. Caitlyn stands by the fire and throws another sheet in. It flickers a shade larger before the light disappears back under the rim of the receptacle, until all that is left is the glow in Caitlyn’s eyes. The wind takes a fleck of ash and places it on the back of Vi’s hand. Caitlyn does not look away from the flames.

How apt too, they think, that they are lazing on the rooftop above the main hall when something tingles in the back of their mind. It's not quite an itch, almost a pinch, perhaps a sting. They look down. Cassandra is simply moving through her morning exercises in the usual spot. Tobias is somewhere inside—they never need to worry about him, truth be told. Threats never seem to trickle down to him, not when the throne wouldn't, would go instead to— They look up, look across, and sure enough there are two dark specks on a roof that appear to be drawing closer to the edge. Heavens above. Is there not a single Kiramman born with a sense of self-preservation?
