Dydd calan yw hi heddiw,
Rwy'n dyfod ar eich traws
I 'mofyn am y geiniog,
Neu grwst, a bara a chaws.
O dewch i'r drws yn siriol
Heb newid dim o'ch gwedd;
Cyn daw dydd calan eto
Bydd llawer yn y bedd. #Calennig #HenGalan

"Festivals of the Christian calendar have undoubtedly attracted many pre-Christian customs. Thus Dydd Calan, Y Calan or Calan Ionawr, ‘ New Year’s Day,’ has alone preserved the habit of going from house to house to wish the dwellers a happy new year and to ask for calennig, ‘kalend gift.’ This habit is now kept up with greater regularity in some of the semi-Anglicized towns than even in thoroughly Welsh villages. From forty to fifty years ago, it was the custom to give calennig to the first to demand it, in the case of persons meeting anywhere, and in many families the habit is still kept up."
