"Festivals of the Christian calendar have undoubtedly attracted many pre-Christian customs. Thus Dydd Calan, Y Calan or Calan Ionawr, ‘ New Year’s Day,’ has alone preserved the habit of going from house to house to wish the dwellers a happy new year and to ask for calennig, ‘kalend gift.’ This habit is now kept up with greater regularity in some of the semi-Anglicized towns than even in thoroughly Welsh villages.
