Yasmeen Khan smashes national record in 50-over clash Staff Writer  On a crisp morning at the High Performance (HP) Oval, Yasmeen Khan delivered one of the finest batting performances in Namibian women’s cricket.  In the Capricorn Eagles’ first 50-over match against the CSA Women’s Emerging Academy, she scored an unbeaten 145 off 134 balls—a historic knock that set new national records. Namibia, having lost the toss, were sent in to bat. Yasmeen walked in early, during the second over, joining captain Sune Wittmann with the team in need of runs. Caitlin Gail opened with a string of wides, giving Yasmeen early momentum. The pair built a strong 172-run partnership. Wittmann reached her half-century and contributed 68 off 95 balls before being dismissed. Yasmeen kept going. She hit 15 fours and 5 sixes in her innings. In the ninth over, she scored 14 runs with two boundaries and a six, showing her control and intent. Yasmeen is now the only Namibian woman to score a century in a 50-over match. Her 145 not out is the highest individual score by a Namibian woman in this format. The crowd gave her a standing ovation as she brought up her century. It was a moment of pride for her and for Namibian cricket. This performance not only boosted the Eagles but also confirmed Yasmeen Khan’s place as one of Namibia’s standout players.

Capricorn Eagles gear up for 7-match SA clash Justicia Shipena  Cricket Namibia, in partnership with Cricket South Africa (CSA), has announced a white-ball tour featuring the CSA Emerging Women’s Academy and Namibia’s national women’s team, the Capricorn Eagles. The series will be held from 2 to 12 July in Windhoek, with all matches taking place at the High Performance Oval.  The tour includes four T20s and three 50-over games, giving both squads valuable match experience. For the Capricorn Eagles, the series is a key part of their build-up to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, which Namibia will host at the end of August.  Namibia will face seven other African nations, with only two teams advancing to the global qualifier. Namibia head coach Francois van der Merwe said the team is looking forward to competitive match time. “The Capricorn Eagles are very excited to test their skill development in all departments of the game against a very strong South Africa Emerging Academy team. The aim of the series is to gain important game time for the Capricorn Eagles ahead of the upcoming Africa T20 World Cup Qualifiers at the end of August, which Cricket Namibia will host at their new world-class facility. I would like to see consistency in our execution with both bat and ball during the SA Emerging Academy series,” he said. The CSA Emerging Women’s Academy, led by head coach Dinesha Devnarain, sees the tour as a stepping stone in preparing future Proteas players. “This tour is a vital opportunity for our young players to test themselves in a different environment and against strong opposition. We’ve worked hard in our preparation, and we’re excited to see how the players step up and translate their training into performance. It’s more than just about results; it’s about building confidence, match awareness, and a winning culture,” Devnarain said. CSA Head of High Performance Grant van Velden highlighted the importance of the Namibia tour for player development. “The Namibia tour reflects our commitment to holistic player development. These tours are crucial in providing our emerging players with consistent international exposure, which is essential for their transition to the senior level. We’re grateful to Cricket Namibia for their collaboration and look forward to competitive, high-quality cricket,” he said. The tour kicks off with the T20 series, beginning on 2 July at 14h00, when the CSA Emerging Women’s Academy faces Namibia in the first match at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek.  The second T20 will be played the following day, 3 July, at 14h00, at the same venue.  Action resumes on 5 July at 14h00 with the third T20 match, followed by the fourth and final T20 on 6 July, also at 14h00, closing off the short-format leg of the tour. The 50-over series starts on 8 July at 10h00, with the first one-day match between the two sides.  The second fixture will be held on 10 July at 10h00, while the final match of the tour will take place on 12 July, also at 10h00.  All matches in both series will be played at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek.

Mwatile sisters shine in T20 series  The Mwatile sisters Wilka (24) and Mekelaye (19) have become leading members of the Namibian Capricorn Eagles squad, while both excelled in their recent International T20 series against Uganda. In a thrilling series, Uganda won the first two matches but Namibia struck back to tie the series at 2-2. Namibia then edged 3-2 ahead after winning the fifth match by one run, but Uganda remarkably won the final match by the same margin to tie the series. Wilka and Meke were both in great form with bat and ball, with Wilka winning the Player of the Series award with a total of 316 points, while Meke finished second overall with 307 points. Both sisters were among the top bowlers of the series with six wickets each, while Wilka was the fifth best batter with 102 runs at an average of 20.40 and a highest score of 27. Meke finished seventh amongst the batters with 87 runs at an average of 43.50 and a top score of 60 not out, which came off only 49 balls and included six fours and two sixes. In that match, the fifth T20 international of the series, she also took three wickets for 24 runs to win the player of the match award. After making her debut for Namibia in 2018, Wilka soon established herself on the team and has since become one of the most experienced players in the squad, winning 84 caps for her country. She has scored close to 700 runs at an average of 12.22 and a highest score of 33, while she has taken 77 wickets at an average of 14.70 and a best performance of five wickets for six runs. Meke, who is still only 19 years old, has already won 41 caps for Namibia after making her debut in 2021. She has scored 297 runs at an average of 13.50 with a highest score of 60 not out, and taken 28 wickets with a best performance of 3/12. Wilka said it was a great feeling to win the Player of the Series award. “I’m really excited and happy that I won the Player of the Series award because at least I know I didn’t work hard for nothing. It’s a perfect moment, and I’m thankful for it,” she said. She said her personal best performance in the tournament was her innings of 21 not out in the final international, which came off only seven balls. “When I came in today I was just hitting everything and it was really exciting. I was so confident, and I just thought that I had nothing to lose,” she said. Meke was also delighted with her performances. “It was great, this is the best tournament I’ve ever played in, I worked very hard for it, so I’m just glad that it paid off,” she said. Meke said she started playing the game after joining Wilka at training. “Wilka was the reason why I started playing cricket – she went to cricket practice every day so I just followed her because she was supposed to babysit me. Thats how it started and then I moved up the ranks from u11 and Kwata cricket, through the age groups up to the national team,” she said. “Cricket is the best thing that I’ve ever had in my life. It’s a great sport and its never too late to learn, no matter how old you are. The most important thing is just to continue practising, to put in the hard work and never give up,” she added. Wilka said her main ambition is to become a professional player. “Cricket means a lot to me and I’ve always dreamed of becoming a professional cricket player. I see myself playing really big cricket one day, and inspiring the younger generation. All I have to say to the young ones is that they should just keep working hard and keep believing in themselves, and that one day they will make it,” she said.
