British explorer #CaptainJamesCook was ordered to treat #indigenous people with civility and avoid violence, but on #ThisDayInHistory in 1779 he tried to kidnap a #Hawaiian aliʻi nui (leader) and fired into a crowd so he was deservedly clubbed in the head and stabbed in the neck.
