A local Hoosier champion and occasional actor prior, Pierce was selected by Edgar Rice Burroughs himself to play the apeman in 1927’s “Tarzan and the Golden Lion.” Pierce had to vacate his role in “Wings” to don the loincloth, paving the way for Gary Cooper’s rise to stardom. “Golden Lion” was more faithful to Burroughs’ literary character than most Hollywood adaptations, and was produced by FBO, a rather small time silent era movie studio co-bankrolled by Joseph P. Kennedy (father to the later President John F. Kennedy). Seen in my sketch are Pierce, in a censor-sponsored “over the shoulder” tunic, with the titular lion, Jab-bal-ja. Though the film did solid numbers at the box-office, critics were largely unimpressed (an opinion shared with Pierce). Pierce would later become Burroughs’ son-in-law, wedding Joan Burroughs the year after “Golden Lion’s” release. Pierce would return to the Tarzan role in a long running 1930s radio series, with his wife Joan playing Jane.
