I also get a superior feeling when I bike thru a traffic jam. But those people are trapped in the cars and we need to offer a way out more than offer feelings
There is nothing so American as coming up with a mass transit "solution" that finds a way, for about 100x what it would cost to build a nice rail system, to make it so there are more cars on the road than drivers.... (I can't remember quote source)

I'm sorry it is trapping you and your family so intensely, that is rough. The solutions are indeed bikes and transit, and not putting money into cars.
But you are also correct that individually we can't do much (except bike - and that is...)
