The ever so spindly #Tripterococcus brunonis part of the #Celastraceae family, and are named for their winged fruit, and supposedly smell nice at night though I never gone out to find out for myself what they smell like
Celastrus scandens, American bittersweet, full of fruit and climbing a leafless tree
#Celastrus scandens, our native bittersweet, nice and heavy with those exposed arils. Most bittersweet we see ‘round here is the invasive C. orbiculatus… but I’m always gonna pull over when I see these terminal fruit clusters (orbiculatus are in the leaf axils). #iamabotanist #Celastraceae

Outside the #Celastraceae, we can find other spp with the fungus gnat #pollination syndrome of dull red flowers, short anthers, & [maybe] acetoin. 1. Aucuba japonica (#Garryaceae), Andy Morffew CCBY2. 2. Griselinia racemosa (#Griseliniaceae), Nicolás Arcos CCBYNC4. #Diptera #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

There are other species of #Celastraceae with dull red flowers & short anthers & produce nectar (& maybe acetoin?). I can’t say if they are pollinated by fungus gnats, but it seems likely. This is Crossopetalum gaumeri of Mexico & C. America. #Diptera #gnat #pollination #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
