(Book review) >No More Rules< Rhett Remington definitely lives up to the book title, being as broody as one can without inciting a brawl every time his mouth opens. I oscillated between liking and hating the broody bas**rd. 😄 As for Lucille "Lucy" Hurst, she's been around the series since book one. If you've read from the beginning, it won't be surprising that she's fierce and doesn't back down from much. While that remains the case, I like that we get to see behind her walls. -- Book quote 'Four months. I could do that.... Right? That’s four months to fix his image. Four months of pretending to be husband and wife. We can do it. We can figure out how to tolerate each other to make this sham look believable. Assuming we don’t kill each other first.' -- Lucy Hurst Perhaps the best parts of this book are the friendships that Rhett unintentionally develops with the team. Despite his best efforts, they worm their way in. The banter and support, quiet and loud, are highly entertaining. Of course, Lucy and Rhett breaking all their rules brings about another kind of delight. 🔥🥵 There are some content warnings. The most notable is child abuse that continues into adulthood. There are flashbacks to some events, and the general mood of those years is conveyed. Plus, verbal abuse is shown on several occasions. Prior reading isn't necessary. That said, characters from past and future series books are present. I suspect that we also meet a few folks for a future series, but I haven't confirmed it. I read along with the audio book. The narrators, Monica King and Chris Chambers, do a good job. Although, I do wish it was a duet so that accents and overall character tone were consistent. Story: 4.5 stars Narration: 4 stars Listening Speed: 1.8x

(Book review) >Dirty Little Secret< My reaction to book two in this series is radically different than book one. I absolutely love Taggart "Tag" Harris and Ethel "Elle" Hurst. Their banter is right up there. The dirty talk? Even better. And their overall chemistry is exactly what I wanted. -- Book quote 'She stares at the empty glasses like I’m staring at her, like she’s in desperate need of regret, and I’m only happy to oblige us both.' -- Tag Harris Tag has some very justifiable abandonment issues. Even though I'm not fond of how he may have handled a situation or two, I can appreciate his unwillingness to be someone's dirty little secret. When it comes to Elle, she's saucy, loving, and funny, except when it comes to her daddy. She feels like she's stuck between a rock and a hard place. That sniveling dweeb Warren proves to be, well, a sniveling dweeb. Too bad she didn't lay him out. I will say, a 25-year-old lamenting about something being "all she's known her entire adult life" does need a bit of help understanding the concept of perspective. Seven years of the past versus possibly seven decades into the future. Hmmm....🤔 This was one of the few things I took issue with. The rest involved her overbearing father. The missing element in their story is Chloe. I love Chloe. She's been handed a raw deal. I love how Tag steps up to do right by her. The realism of his self-doubt was palpable. And Elle. She may not have been legally or genetically... encouraged... to help, but her compassion was instrumental in Chloe flourishing. I absolutely love how Chloe takes Tag to task. A few times. It's possibly the best part of the book. 😆 There should be a second generation just so we can see her tear apart some db as she finds her own HEA. Just sayin'. (Book review) >Disappointed< He's a bit of a caveman at times, but I like Lincoln "Linc" Dallas for most of the book. I can't say the same for Jazlyn "Jazz" Benson. I like them together, but on her own, Jazz drives me bonkers so much of the time. Ugh! Threatening notes and other events, disrespectful subordinates, etc, and what does she do? She does a duck and run. It's no wonder she isn't taken seriously. I know many female hockey players, and none of them would allow that kind of disrespect, especially related to a sport they excel at. They worked too hard to let that happen. Grrr.... (Umm, so this has obviously hit a nerve. I'm gonna step off my soap box now.) -- Book quote 'Adam and Eve’s corruption came in the form of an apple. That man—that sexy-as-fuck hockey playing man—could easily become mine.' -- Jazlyn Benson As for Linc, his jealousy got to be too much towards the end. He took unnecessary risks, somewhat staking his claim in public after agreeing to the opposite, and acting like a 🍆. By the end of the book, I was so over both of them. The saving grace were the extra spicy times and some of the non-romantic relationships. I've already read and liked one of the later books in the series and decided to bridge the gap. I'm going to continue and pray that this is as bad as it gets. Keep your fingers crossed. I read along with the audio book.
