Hugely proud to have #CoastalConvoys cited in Roger Knight’s fantastic new book for @YaleBooks and to have had the chance last month to whisk him over to Longhope for a quick peek at @HistEnvScot ‘s beautiful Martello Tower.

Finding the same man taking part in the #BattleoftheSeineBay whose story I told in #CoastalConvoys twelve years ago is genuinely like renewing an old friendship. #GreatestGeneration @jo_godfrey

It records twin brothers Hedley and Arthur Smale, who both lost their lives serving with the Royal Naval Patrol Service in the Second World War. The RNPS featured a lot in my book #CoastalConvoys they nicknamed themselves ‘Churchill’s Pirates!’

OK thread alert. Jack Yeatman was a Telegraphist in the Royal Naval Patrol Service trawler HMS Pearl. I first came across his testimony, which is broken into entries on the wonderful http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/ archive when I wrote #CoastalConvoys – in fact Jack has...

On 7 May 1945 U2336 lined up on SS Avondale Park & SS Sneland 1, crossing the Firth of Forth in coastal convoy EN591, & sank them both. They were the last merchant ships lost to enemy action in European waters. The following day Nazi Germany surrendered. #VEDay75 #CoastalConvoys

Oops missed a #BookADay yesterday but here’s today’s. Spoiled for choice with Richard Woodman, the finest historian of the Merchant Navy, but this one was my bible when I worked on #HMSBelfast Richard inspired me to write #CoastalConvoys & was kind enough to write the foreword.

Morning all :) Here’s today’s #BookADay J P Foynes’ incredible self-published gazetteer of the war on the East Coast, hard to find but well worth it. A great inspiration & source for me when I wrote #CoastalConvoys Didn’t have my own copy so had to make 100s of pages of notes!

13.02.40. Coaster “Boston Trader” bombed & strafed by a German aircraft. Captain Brown takes the helm & repeatedly evades but on 5th pass a bomb explodes alongside opening up the hull & stopping the engine. The crew abandon & the burning ship sinks. #CoastalConvoys #NoPhonyWar

80 years ago #WW2 was nearly a month old & people were joking about the #PhoneyWar. It was never phoney at sea. First #CoastalConvoys began on 6 September 1939, London needed 40,000+ tons of coal a week & roads & railways couldn’t provide it. The East Coast was brutal from day 1.
