We’ve been working in various levels of clouds and fog since I arrived, so what a Saturday treat to wale up to a clear sunrise! #ColdCoralsWithChris #Aleutians 🌊🧪

Super excited to have gotten to dive in HOV Alvin a 2nd time; first in Atlantic and now in Pacific! Having lunch ~1 mile underwater ✅ #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪👩🔬
Travel coffee tumbler with Kellogg lab sticker showing a rainbow-colored mermaid with DNA helix for tail, next to regular styrofoam cup with sticker design drawn on it with colored Sharpies
Same travel coffee tumbler as last photo, same styrofoam cup but after a trip to over 1600 meters deep on outside of sub during my dive
Before and after pix of my styrofoam commemorative cup (artwork by Lauren Rice bc you know I don’t have those skills)! #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪

Sorry to be missing #ASMicrobe this year, but thinking of y’all and wearing my “I Have Friends In Small Places” sweatshirt today in solidarity! Have a great conference! #ColdCoralsWithChris
Red panel of switches inside Alvin sub labeled “Emergency Releases”
A rack of 12 green oxygen bottles inside Alvin sub (usually only use 1 per dive but carry plenty extra)

We don’t have a satellite livestream on this expedition, but to get a sense of what it looks like underwater (hint: lots of coldwater corals!) here is some footage from an expedition in the general area last year #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪🦑 oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeanos/expl...
We completed two submersible dives near Bogoslof Island. This target area was of geologic and natural hazard interest, but we also got some coral samples #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪 link.springer.com/article/10.1...
First blog post of the expedition is up! About community engagement activities in Unalaska #ColdCoralsWithChris www.usgs.gov/centers/wetl...
This morning’s bonus, fur seals swimming around the ship! Video clip courtesy of Lauren Rice, bc I couldn’t be trusted not to drop my new phone overboard 🌊🦑🧪 #ColdCoralsWithChris
View from behind of a woman standing on a ship deck wearing a bright fluorescent yellow float coat with USGS logo on it.
Have very much appreciated this highly visible, warm, floaty (in case of emergency) coat! #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪👩🔬

Took more than one try, but we made it from Anchorage to Unalaska to meet the ship. During flight, could see volcano peaks above the clouds! #ColdCoralsWithChris 🌊🧪
Chris Kellogg crouched in front of the submersible Alvin, next to the platform at the front with all the different kinds of sampling gear.
Many days, I wondered if it would actually happen, but the ship has arrived in Unalaska and I get on a plane tomorrow, so we are GO.
And yes, I do my own stunts.
