Happy #NewReleaseFriday! If you followed my #ContemporariesOfHaydn series, you'll already know Franz Xaver Richter (1709-1789). If not, this #NewRelease from CPO is a great way to meet him. If Papa Joe was the father of the symphony, Franz is at least a great uncle of the genre!

#NewRelease Johann Baptist Vaňhal aka Vaňhal/Waṅhal/Wanhall/Vanhal/Van Hall (1739-1813) was one of the finest and most prolific #ContemporariesOfHaydn. His symphonies have largely been the preserve of period bands, but these sweet and stylish modern-instrument accounts are absolutely first-class.

Happy #NewReleaseFriday! Georg Joseph Vogler (1749-1814) was one of the most celebrated #ContemporariesOfHaydn in his lifetime, yet Mozart considered him a charlatan. Which side of history will Howard Griffiths prove right with his intriguing #NewRelease?

Brilliant! And the next concert looks great too - one for both the #A-Haydn-A-Day and the #ContemporariesOfHaydn hashtags!

Listening time has been scarce lately (I'm only just starting on Op. 33 for #A-Haydn-A-Day) but every now and then I've been listening to Leopold Koželuch, one of those #ContemporariesOfHaydn from a few weeks ago. He can be quite interesting! I'll put some impressions as replies to this:

#NewReleaseFriday is late again, but it's my birthday today, so sampling the week's symphony and orchestral #NewReleases is like opening a bumper set of presents. First recordings of symphonies by one of my favourite #ContemporariesOfHaydn? Thanks, that's just what I wanted!

Very much so. I dipped back into vol. 3 yesterday for the G minor symphony of Koželuch, rightly
@deeplyclassical.bluesky.net's playlist choice for #ContemporariesOfHaydn. They are such good advocates.

Six more devilishly good #ContemporariesOfHaydn now have symphonies on my playlist:

#31 Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805)
#32 Franz Xaver Richter (1709-1789)
#33 Michael Haydn (1737-1806)
#34 John Marsh (1752-1828)
#35 Johannes Matthias Sperger (1750-1812)
#36 Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812)

Continuing to amble at my own pace through the #ContemporariesOfHaydn series and have been listening to Mysliveček. The theatrical high spirits of his fast movements, in particular, are a tonic. I think I'll branch out from the symphonies to try his wind octets before moving on.

Five more #ContemporariesOfHaydn 🧵

#26 Pieter van Maldere (1729-1768)

Maldere visited Dublin, Paris and Vienna as a violin virtuoso before returning to his native Brussels. His 40 symphonies circulated far and wide, from Sweden to the New World. Haydn, Mozart and Dittersdorf all knew his work.

Five #ContemporariesOfHaydn in one 🧵

#21 Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777)

Vienna's court composer from 1739 until his death. His symphonies were a model for the young Haydn when he was starting out.

Currently listening to a very diverting trio of Divertimenti for wind by Antonio Cartellieri, one of last week's #ContemporariesOfHaydn

His long career began in the Ancien Régime's baroque world. He prospered through the French Revolution, was friends with Napoleon, and died as Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique was about to revolutionize the symphony again.

#ContemporariesOfHaydn #20

François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829)

🧵 The "Father of the French Symphony" transformed Paris's musical scene. His spectacular symphonies made French audiences fall in love with instrumental music and, as head of the Concert Spirituel, he made Haydn the toast of the town.

#classicalmusic #MyDailyDose #Cambini

While we were discussing #ContemporariesOfHaydn earlier, I was reminded to relisten Cambini (1746 - 1825), 2 of whose symphonies appear here, along with 2 Sinfonias concertante which are amazingly tuneful. Symphonies more serious, more Viennese than Parisian! 🤠

Like Zimmermann's symphony yesterday, Cartellieri's stormy C-minor finale delivers a final surprise by ending quietly.

#ContemporariesOfHaydn #19

Antonio Cartellieri (1772-1807)

🧵 The latest composer in my series was born two years after Beethoven, but qualifies by virtue of failing to outlive Haydn, and by writing his first symphony just as Haydn returned from London to Vienna after composing his last.

I love the way Zimmermann's E-minor symphony finishes by fading away eerily to nothing, an effect he repeats in the C-minor on the same disc.

Anton Zimmermann (1741-1781)

🧵 If you love Haydn's E-minor Sturm und Drang masterpiece the "Trauer" symphony, then check out this symphony in similar vein composed by the Kapellmeister at the Pressburg court, not 50 miles away from the Eszterházy Palace.

Johann Franz Xaver Sterkel (1750-1817)

🧵 If this glorious noise doesn't get your blood pumping, then seek medical attention at once! Ignore the video date, this symphony's probably from the early 1790s, when the young Beethoven met Sterkel and became a lifelong fan.
