The Crate Escape - A Beaufighter’s Last Mission. 🎥 In this video, Dr Harry Raffal, Head of Collections and Research, shares a powerful object from our stored collection: a tally board from 600 Squadron, salvaged from an Italian SM.84 tri-motor aircraft during the Second World War 🛩️. More than a record of aerial victories, this object tells a deeper story: the bravery and sacrifice of Pilot Officer Simpson and Sergeant Giles, who intercepted an enemy formation over Tunisia on 21 February 1943 🕯️. Though successful in their mission, their Beaufighter was lost in the explosion that followed. This is just one of thousands of historic RAF objects 📦 our team is transferring from our MOD Stafford collection to their new home at our Midlands site 🏢, which opens to the public in summer 2027 📅. This complex operation involves careful coordination, object inspections, and conservation work 🧰 to ensure everything is safely prepared for the move. Our logistics team protects and packs each object with care, readying them for transit 🚛.
