“If money was our only driver, we’d have changed it long ago”: why Gent-Wevelgem is getting a new name in 2026 Team names and race titles can be a headache for cycling fans, with sponsors calling the shots and long, unwieldy labels the result—2026 will be no different. You know Gent-Wevelgem and the Critérium du Dauphiné, right? Next season, both will appear on the calendar under new names. In the Dauphiné’s...

Pogacar again soars away from stellar field to increase Criterium du Dauphine lead For the second straight day, Tadej Pogacar rode away from his main rivals on the final ascent as he cemented his grip on the Criterium de Dauphine yellow jersey in Saturday’s mountainous ‘Queen Stage’. “I launched it and maintained a good pace to the top,” he said at the finish. The Slovenian had grabbed the overall lead the day before when he shot clear on the short closing climb. On Saturday’s penultimate stage, a 131.7km run from Grand-Aigueblanche, Pogacar’s UAE team-mate Pavel Sivakov reduced the leading pack by setting a ferocious tempo at the front at the start of the 20-kilometre final climb to Valmeinier ski resort. With 12km to go, Pogacar upped the tempo, standing on his pedals and rocketing clear. As on Friday, only his main Tour de France rival Jonas Vingegaard and young German Florian Lipowitz could respond. Vingegaard settled into a dogged pursuit. Pogacar, without rising out of his saddle again, was able to maintain an uncatchable pace. He increased his lead to as much as 30 seconds before relaxing up toward the end. He cruised across the line 14 seconds ahead of Vingegaard, quivering with effort as he came home. “Today Jonas was really strong I did not want to go too deep myself,” said Pogacar. “It was a super hot and long climb. Luckily, I had enough time to ease up in the last kilometres and recovered.” “Happy I could defend the jersey like this.” Lipowitz was again third at 1min 21sec Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who had led the overall classification, until Friday, finished fifth, as he had on Friday, losing 2 minutes  and 39 seconds. With one stage to go, Pogacar increased his lead to 1:01 over Vingegaard, 2:01 over German Florian Lipowitz and 4:11 to Evenepoel in fourth. For much of the stage, Vingegaard’s lieutenants on the powerful Visma team launched attack after attack, but they could not shake off Pogacar, or Sivakov, either going up or down the day’s biggest climb the  Col de la Croix de Fer. “We wanted to take control on all the climbs, but Visma tried with all the attacks. I was pretty happy with how Pavel and the team rode today. It was sort of defence, to not get attacked by everyone from Visma,” said Pogacar. He complained at the way Visma had tried to drop him on the descent of the Col de Croix de Fer. “They went a little bit dangerous in the first kilometres of the downhill,” he said. “I didn’t like that, but it’s modern cycling,” he said. With the Tour de France starting on July 5, Pogacar beat Vingegaard to take a third stage victory in the race. It was also the 98th of the Slovenian’s career, breaking a tie with French sprinter Arnaud Demare for most by an active rider. He has a chance for one more on Sunday when the race finishes with another mountainous stage, 133.3km from Val-d’Arc to the Plateau du Mont-Cenis. Pogacar back in Dauphine yellow after sixth stage victory Tadej Pogacar soloed to victory in the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Friday to reclaim the yellow jersey and put himself firmly in contention for overall victory. With this 97th victory of his career, the Slovenian, who cruised in 1min 1sec ahead of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, becomes the active rider with the joint-most victories — on a par with French sprinter Arnaud Demare. Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who was leading the overall classification, finished fifth at 1min 50sec. Pogacar now has a 43sec lead over Vingegaard, 54sec over German Florian Lipowitz and 1min 22sec over Evenepoel. The Slovenian had already worn the yellow jersey before in this 77th edition of the Dauphine after claiming victory in the first stage last weekend. “I’m super happy to be back in yellow. It was a very good day for us,” said Pogacar. “I’m getting very good answers from this Dauphine. I wasn’t too stressed after the time-trial (on Wednesday) and the shape is here.” On Friday, in the first of three mountain stages and competing under a baking sun, he took his revenge on Vingegaard on the Cote de Domancy, where the Dane had outclassed him in a time-trial at the 2023 Tour de France. The world champion put in an acceleration with 7km to go that left everyone in his wake. Only Vingegaard managed to hang on to his wheel for a few metres before settling back, unable to keep up with his rival. It was an important marker for Pogacar to put down to his leading Tour de France rivals ahead of his title defence following the 26-year-old’s sub-par showing in Wednesday’s time-trial at the Dauphine. Saturday’s queen stage is a mountainous 132km run from Grand-Aigueblanche to Valmeinier 1800. The post Pogacar back in Dauphine yellow after sixth stage victory appeared first on The Namibian.

Stewart sprints to Dauphine fifth stage win, Evenepoel holds lead British rider Jake Stewart won a sprint finish to triumph in the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Thursday as Belgian Remco Evenepoel held onto the race lead. Israel Premier Tech rider Stewart claimed his first career victory in a World Tour race, edging the bunched finale ahead of Frenchman Axel Laurance and Norwegian Soren Waerenskjold after the hilly 183km run from Saint-Priest to Macon. “That one feels good,” said the 25-year-old who finished fifth in Sunday’s opening stage in Montlucon. “The boys backed me… and the team backed me, they did an awesome job, so I’m just so happy that I could finish it off for them.” The Israel Premier Tech team managed to win despite the race retirement of its German sprinter Pascal Ackermann, who fell during the stage. “It’s such a shame with Ackermann, he crashed again today, and it was handed over to me there for the final, but it was also a really good day for him, so I’m gutted that he didn’t get to contest the finish,” added Stewart. Evenepoel, who took the yellow jersey since Wednesday’s time-trial, crashed in the final kilometre but was able to resume without difficulty and lost no time in the overall standings. “There are no major injuries, just small scratches,” said the Belgian. “I was coming out of the roundabout, I wanted to accelerate, and I slipped. My hands were slippery from the wet weather, so maybe I slipped off the handlebars or started pedalling too early.” Evenepoel is expected to battle with Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar for the overall victory in the Alps. Jonathan Milan, winner of the second stage in Issoire on Monday, was the favourite in the event of a bunch sprint. On the Cote des Quatre Vents — the final climb of the stage over 5.4km at a 4.6 percent gradient — the towering Italian resisted the acceleration of Mathieu van der Poel’s Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates. But he paid for his efforts afterwards, only finishing fifth in the sprint, despite having been ideally placed by his Lidl-Trek teammates. Friday’s sixth stage is a hilly 126.7km run from Valserhone to Combloux near the border with Switzerland. Evenepoel dominates Dauphine time trial to slip into yellow Time-trial maestro Remco Evenepoel laid down a marker in the fourth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Wednesday, winning the 17.4km race against the clock in style to move top of the overall classification. The 25-year-old Belgian tasted Olympic gold in the discipline last year and is also the double time-trial world champion, and showed his pedigree by blowing out a field containing Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. Evenepoel raced home 21sec ahead of second-placed Dane Vingegaard, with USA’s Matteo Jorgenson a further 17sec back in third. Pogacar just missed the podium at 49sec, 8sec ahead of fifth-placed German Florian Lipowitz and 13sec in front of Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel. “I’m surprised with the gaps,” Evenepoel said. “It’s quite big on quite a short TT so I’m very happy to have put over a second per kilometre on everybody, and even two seconds per kilometre on some. “I’m feeling good and it’s always nice to bring home a World Tour victory.” Evenepoel now slips on the leader’s yellow jersey for the 77th edition of the Dauphine, which will be decided in the last three stages in the Alps from Friday. His win was the 1000th victory in the history of his Soudal Quick-Step team, following its creation in 2003 by Patrick Lefevere under the name Quick Step-Davitamon. “I’m very happy with this victory, it’s the 1000th of the team,” Evenepoel added. “It’s a special day, I’m very proud to have done it.” Of the three frontrunners for the overall win, Pogacar now finds himself the least well-placed. Although the overall classification is far from set, the Slovenian is now in eighth place, 38sec behind Evenepoel, while Vingegaard is 16sec back in fifth. “I probably got the pacing slightly wrong,” reigning Tour de France champion Pogacar said. “I started on the first section a bit too conservative and should have pushed a bit more. “But it’s OK, that’s why we are here, to tune-up before the Tour and improve,” the 26-year-old added. On Thursday’s fifth stage, the peloton takes on a hilly 183km run from Saint-Priest to Macon. The post Evenepoel dominates Dauphine time trial to slip into yellow appeared first on The Namibian.

Romeo wins Dauphine third stage to take yellow Spain’s Ivan Romeo won the third stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Tuesday when he streaked clear at the end of a 207km run from Brioude to Charantonnay to cross the line first and claim the overall lead. Romeo surprised his breakaway companions, including Dutch world champion Mathieu van der Poel, to drop them in the final kilometres and lead the dash into the town of Charantonnay. “I’ve been thinking about this stage for a month now. I can hardly believe it. It was one of the hardest days of my life, I wasn’t feeling well,” said time-trial specialist Romeo. “But I followed my instincts in the final. It’s the best day of the year for me. Hard work pays off.” It was the second win of the 21-year-old Movistar rider’s career, and earned him the yellow leader’s jersey on the eve of the first time-trial in this edition of the Dauphine. Romeo completed the hilly run across the southeast of France in 4hr 34min 10sec. Colombian Astana rider Harold Tejada came in second at 14sec, with Frenchman Louis Barre of Intermarche completing the podium. The peloton, containing many of the race favourites, rolled in just over a minute later at the end of a day without any major incidents. One of those contenders for the general classification is Red Bull leader Florian Lipowitz — in the absence of last year’s winner Primoz Roglic — who did well to slip into the breakaway and come in just outside the podium. The German sits fourth overall, with a 42sec advantage over ninth-placed Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. The breakaway formed quickly after the start, and was composed of 13 riders. The first big break came on the Cote du Chateau Jaune, with its average gradient of over 9 percent, situated 19km from the finish. After this final climb, only 10 riders remained amongst the contenders for the stage, and victory seemed to be in the grasp of Van der Poel — the fastest of the bunch. But Romeo had other ideas, attacking for the first time with 9km remaining before going again and quickly opening up a sizeable gap on the chasing pack. Wednesday’s fourth stage will be a 17.4km time-trial between Charmes-sur-Rhone and Saint-Peray. The post Romeo wins Dauphine third stage to take yellow appeared first on The Namibian.
