What is the profile of a cyberstalker? The profile of a cyberstalker (also called an online stalker) is not a single uniform type, as motivations and behaviors vary, but research and expert analyses identify common psychological, behavioral, and demographic patterns among perpetrators. Cyberstalkers use digital tools (social media, email, messaging apps, search engines, GPS tracking, spyware, or fake profiles) to repeatedly harass, monitor, intimidate, threaten, or control a target, often creating fear for the victim's safety or privacy. Common Psychological and Personality Characteristics Cyberstalkers frequently exhibit traits associated with impaired empathy, poor impulse control, and a need for power or dominance: Lack of empathy — They show little regard for the distress they cause. Obsession and fixation — Intense, unhealthy preoccupation with the target, often involving constant monitoring of their online activity. Dark personality traits (often called the "Dark Triad" or "Dark Tetrad") — Strongly linked in studies to cyberstalking perpetration: Narcissism — Grandiosity, entitlement, and need for admiration or control.
