Regelmäßig wird behauptet, dass das Gerät nur eingesetzt werde, um den Einsatz der Schusswaffe zu verhindern. Dabei wird der Taser in der Regel in Situationen eingesetzt, in der auch der Schusswaffeneinsatz nicht gerechtfertigt wäre. Zusätzlich ist zu befürchten, dass mit der Zeit die Hemmschwelle für den Einsatz weiter sinkt. Letztlich gefährdet der Taser auch die Einsatzkräfte. Denn häufig wirkt das Gerät nicht zuverlässig.

Es wird auf das Risiko hingewiesen, dass die Hemmschwelle für den Einsatz sinkt und dass das Gerät nicht immer zuverlässig wirkt. Dies kann auch Einsatzkräfte gefährden. Auch das immer wieder für die Einführung angeführte Element, es schliesse eine Lücke zum Schusswaffeneinsatz, wird kritisiert, weil es sehr zweifelhaft ist, dass in einer wirklich lebensbedrohlichen Situation zuerst zum Taser und nicht zur Schusswaffe gegriffen wird.
