The low and steady bass sinks into the deep carpet and heavily draped walls, blocking out the frantic beats beyond. The air is a soft haze of perfumed incense and clove cigarettes, smoke spirals spinning lazily up into the eaves, drawn in by sluggish ceiling fans. The sense of refuge and refueling here is palpable, as tired muscles, exhausted from hours of exertion, soak up this brief respite. Time is stretched; languid, liminal. This moment of peace and replenishment lasts as long as is necessary before it’s time to plunge back into the joyful chaos of the dancefloor.
