Deanston Virgin Oak Cask Strength - but hang on, though! Another great dram. A drop of water opens it up beautifully.

The whisky shop added in their shop a 12 yo Deanston 2012 from Cut Your Wolf Loose #whisky bottler. Matured for it’s full time in a rare Moscatel port pipe. 55.8% ABV. £55

Both really enjoyable and the Deanston is going to win more than it loses but I love my peat so the Kilchoman just edges it. Despite being NAS, the Kilchoman does not taste like it's much younger compared to the Deanston.

Wow! Really enjoying this 11yo Deanston that I picked up speculatively from @milroysofsoho.bsky.social recently. It is bottled at a punchy 54.8%. It's sweet but spicy with a hint of chilli heat on the finish. Lovely 😍

The LL is described as “heavily peated” but it doesn’t come through for me on the nose On the palate, it is lovely. I enjoy my whisky on the nose as much as the palate and the finish. The Deanston covers that spectrum nicely.

I’d forgotten how good the Ardebg 10 is. Lovely BBQ smoke and sweetness. The Deanston is enjoyable, probably a bit more of a nip than expected on an 18 yr old malt.

The Deanston on the nose and palate is all malt, red fruit and honey. The finish though is a bit more peppery than I'd like. Lustau is more brash on the nose/palate with even deeper red fruit but the finish is more rounded.

The Caol Ila only won this due to the fact I'm a peat head. Otherwise these are both delightful whiskies. Deanston really impressive.

Probably my value pick for 2024. A straightforward but consistently delicious whisky. It makes a perfect calibration dram with plenty of sweet vanilla and oak notes, and an unctuous oily mouth feel, that you can follow up with something more complex. 6.5/10.
