We follow in the steps of four cohorts of brilliant collleagues who, within 14 years, brought together a Europe-wide and international network of scholars. Today, with 500+ members, the #DemoInno standing group is one of ECPR’s largest, most vibrant research communities.

Call for Papers: The Political Economy of Democratic Innovations
Panel proposal for the Democratic Innovations section of the ECPR General Conference 2025.

Chairs: Adrian Bua (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and Lucy Parry (University of Edinburgh and University of Canberra)
Discussant: Oliver Escobar (University of Edinburgh)

Since their inception, democratic innovations (DIs) have been touted as a means for addressing crises of democracy. By reconnecting citizens with political decision-making, empowering marginalised communities, they aim to foster a more inclusive, responsive governance system. The urgency of realising these ambitions is sharpening. Environmental, political, economic and social challenges are emerging and deepening, and our collective capacity to deal with these in an equitable and democratic manner seems to be diminishing. The capacity of democratic innovations to deliver on these ambitions remains questionable. Emerging empirical evidence casts doubt on their transformative potential and problematises simplified narratives on impact.
In response, recent scholarship in democratic innovations and participatory democracy has called for greater understanding of their interaction with capitalist dynamics. By examining the ways in which DIs both reflect and reshape socioeconomic conditions, scholars are beginning to question whether and how they can drive significant change. We seek theoretical and empirical contributions that critically examine how DIs both reflect and reconfigure socioeconomic realities, encouraging papers that explore the ways in which practices interact with social power structures, state institutions, and collective agency, highlighting the transformative potential and challenges faced by DIs.
