I have 4 hidden disabilities that have developed over my lifetime. (Well, more if you count glasses & Autism.)
Disabilities aren’t as rare as people think. And, if you live long enough, everyone will develop at least one.
Disability is part of normal life.
Now (at 50) I think I’m having symptoms of mild MCAS. It seems to be getting slowly worse. (I have on/off skin’s reactions to water! Along with seemingly random painful flushing.) May be developing my 4th disability. #disabilitystory
My 3rd disability was fibromyalgia. Diagnosed in my late 40’s but I had symptoms for at least 8yrs before. Added to the chronic pain of my back injury at 25. This one is, at least partially, tamped down by medication. #disabilitystory
My 2nd disability peaked (had it all my life) in my early 30th when my treatment resistant depression and anxiety broke me down completely. I had to stop working. Went on disability. 8month of ECT to recover basic functioning. Still a struggle to treat w/regular TMS. #disabilitystory
My 1st disability hit @ 25yrs. My back went *very* out after many years of non-ergonomic work conditions. (I started working at 14.)
I was unable to even sit up for almost a month. I was given a pitiful settlement for the permanent loss of function I’d have for the rest of my life. #disabilitystory
One #DisabilityStory is the way everything must be therapy - steampunk art groups aren't just because that's fun :( www.bostonglobe.com/metro/regionals/south/20...
