I know I often sound down. But last week was pretty nice. First, I chatted with a former research student #DocMartian Dr Danielle Campbell and discussed career issues. Danielle is just wonderful; a colleague and friend. So proud of her.
As I organize and declutter my little lab, I find nice reminders of things that mattered to me. Like this magnet poem, assembled by #DocMartian research students. @univpugetsound.bsky.social @ASMicrobiology @microbetv.bsky.social
I have always enjoyed showing #Micronauts “who” lives in their water bottles. #DocMartian Chianna demonstrates. These #WaterBottleBuddies are not bad or good. They simply are. #DontFearTheMicrobe #microbialcentrism @asmicrobiology @univpugetsound.bsky.social @microbetv.bsky.social
Both #Micronaut and #DocMartian!
Remembering when Dr. Kim Dill-McFarland was a #Micronaut and #DocMartian in my classes and little lab at the @univpugetsound.bsky.social She made this for me at the time, which I posted outside the lab door. #happymemories LuckyProf. @ASMicrobiology @microbe.tv
Had lunch with former #Micronaut and #DocMartian @ruthlessruth15.bsky.social . It’s a ritual. We are waiting for super good news for her Please send positive thoughts! Ruth is beyond awesome. PS: she came to my micro class today!
Just talked with a former #Micronaut and #DocMartian student who is now a finalist for a tenure track position at a university. To be clear: every accomplishment is entirely due to the skills and hard work of this person; I simply was the talent scout who convinced them they COULD do it. 1/2
That feeling when a former #Micronaut and #DocMartian has an in person interview for a tenure track job. Please send positivity out into the ether on this great person's behalf. #ItsAllAboutTheStudents #SkilledTalentScout
Good feelings / Bad feelings today. First, writing a super letter of recommendation for a former #DocMartian applying for a faculty position. Second, a leak in my lab ceiling led to a big pool of water on the floor. I thought my -80 had quit.
What a nice thing to see this morning in my department at the University of Puget Sound: recognition of the great work my students do. Congrats to #DocMartian Chianna. We ALL do wonderful work with our fine students. @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology
My #DocMartian undergraduate research students this semester at the University of Puget Sound. @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology
Lego used to make scientist minifigs. I often would have my lab students use spare parts from Lego to create their avatar. Here is former #DocMartian and #Micronaut Lauren’s effort. The last few years students haven’t been excited by the idea. So: a happy memory!! @laurennaugusta
From 15 years ago, the year before I earned tenure by the skin of my teeth. A wonderful #DocMartian, now Dr. Kim Dill-McFarland, made this for me. It’s posted outside my little laboratory. #Grateful #Memories #DocMartians #ItsAllAboutTheStudents I will miss them all.
Here is #DocMartian Chianna showing pride in her microbiological skills. It is so wonderful when they start asking "what's next?" and really thinking about their data. I am grateful to all of my research students, from the bottom of my #MicrobialHeart
There is no requirement for my #DocMartian undergraduate research students to stay in touch. But it touches my soul when they do. I'm grateful to each and everyone one of them in my life. Every good thing in my career is because of them. Thank you, Ruth Isenberg and Emily Brovey
Here is hoping that #BabyCarl the emotional support snake at @univpugetsound from the #DocMartian lab makes you smile. He is just a little guy!
When a #DocMartian undergraduate research student, now with a PhD, writes to me about her first author article, and attaches a kind note? Really uplifting. Mind you, students do NOT have to stay in touch with me. But I am grateful to those who do. #ResearchTalentScout #TheyAreTheStars
Hey, Seth! #DocMartian Hannah is looking at some of my isopods for Wolbachia, following the Discover the Microbes Within guidelines. She didn’t like homogenizing the little isopods. @symbionticism.bsky.social
I like seeing what passerby write on the whiteboard outside of my lab,The first two answers are from my #DocMartian research students. The last two are from...who knows? The first of them shows knowledge about cheese. The other ones may have heard of Rob Dunn's "Belly Button Microbiome" project.
One of the first #LuxSelfies (people illuminated by bacterial bioluminescence) I successfully photographed. #Micronaut and #DocMartian Ruth Isenberg...and I did not retouch her eyes. So: camera glitch or demonic entity? You decide. @ruthlessruth15.bsky.social
It is a wonderful feeling to watch one of my #DocMartian undergraduate research students present for our summer research program here at the University of Puget Sound. Go #DocMartian Chianna!
One of my current #DocMartian undergraduate research students made me an emoticon. Or *into* an emoticon?
One of my #DocMartian soil isolates. Siderophore production? It’s on R2A medium. Maybe it won’t make the fluorescent compound on high iron medium? @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology
Lunch with my #DocMartian research students yesterday. I will miss research students: their energy, sense of wonder, and humor.
Ten years ago, a former #DocMartian sent me a birthday message composed of anesthesized Drosophila. I adore working with students, and appreciate them remembering me kindly.
One of my summer #DocMartian undergraduate research students found this as part of a #MarineMicrobiologicalSafari. Do colony-colony interactions create the pigment seen in this photo?
Two “monitor pals” for the top of my computer. The one on the left was made by a former #DocMartian research student (thank you, Kat!). The one on the right is a newer addition. They make me happy.
I worry about going overboard and all. But a mug with a lab logo and their #DocMartian number just doesn't seem enough. To me. 2/2
One of my #DocMartian undergraduate research students graduated today, and represented #MicrobialPride via @artologica’s art. Good luck and thank you, Amanda.
It does my heart such good to see what I think is a successful cloning experiment by a #DocMartian undergraduate research student.
