Another excellent year of #EMROCTranscribes, this year at Birkbeck with a great group who enjoyed Zooming with transcribers @rcphysicians.bsky.social & elsewhere and the thought-provoking talk on the history of #earlymodern abortion from @maryfissell.bsky.social. Thanks as always to EMROC … (1/2)!

Pro tip if you need some empty snail shells: "Take garden snayles and lay them by the fir side the hete whereof will cause the snayles to creepe out" No guidance for what to do, then, with the unhoused snails (from a recipe for kidney stones) #EMROCTranscribes #HistSci #HistFood #HISTSTM #EnvHums

Had to step away from #EMROCTranscribes as the screenwork seemed to be calling forth a migraine. I did not want to try any of the #EarlyModern remedies for it either. My favourite involved a bunch of worms being turned into a plaster for the head, to be worn all night. Shudder. #HistMed

Another to provoke urine involves baking then breaking snails' shells. Take the amount that fits on a knife point and add to white wine... Again, the breaking of stones/shells. Plus the delightful measurement! #EarlyModern #HistMed #EMROCTranscribes

OK. I love this remedy 'to break the stone', which has some literalness. The main ingredient is dried 'clawes of a hogg', which are then filed down and added to a drink. #HistMed #EMROCTranscribes

A wonderful #EarlyModern remedy for toothache in Henslow-- full of the senses! How to dry green bark by the fire or on a gridiron, keeping the ashes on the hearth and wetting them before putting them into a linen bag and laying it under the ear on the sore side. #HistMed #HistSTM #EMROCTranscribes

Any ideas what the 'manes' of frogs would be in a 1642 medical recipe for the falling sickness (ie epilepsy)? #EMROCtranscribes
