Our #ArchiveOfTheWeek are papers of Margaret Howard, member of the Operation Mole Speleological Group and Peak District Mines Historical Society. They investigated “earthquakes” or tremors at Winster in the #1950s which turned out to be collapsing limestone caverns.

This Young Farmers’ Club booklet from the early #1960s explains how farms are managed and soil fertility is maintained, by looking at the example of Green Cowden farm in Derbyshire. You can find a copy in our #LocalStudies library.

The environment has long been a concern in design. The 1972 Annual Report from the Keep Britain Tidy Group was found in the @designcouncil.bsky.social archive's documentation for their 1973 Recycling Exhibition at The Design Centre.

Felled in 1891 (from Kings Canyon National Park, Sierra Nevada), a slice of the ‘Mark Twain’ tree first went on display at the Museum in 1894, installed in one of the bays of the Central Hall (now Hintze Hall).

We love the illustrations of sections of Derbyshire strata in this 1811 book by geologist John Farey so much, that we had them put on our blinds! You can see both the blinds and the book (General View of the Agriculture and Minerals of Derbyshire Vol 1) in our #LocalStudies library.
