We had a fantastic time at the East Midlands AMR Network conference yesterday! ๐ฆ ๐๐งฌ
It was great to meet Will Thompson and Emily Hugo-Webb who are both Policy and Engagement Managers at MicroSoc
We also had some pretty impressive times for our BUZZ wire game ๐ โก

A glass of red wine above a beautiful dog
Well that was a long but very fun day of AMR. I really hope everyone enjoyed it but time to relax with a glass of red wine and a cuddle from my boy! #EastMidsAMR
Had a great day at the #EastMidsAMR conference, really enjoyed to opportunity to present alongside a line up of fantastic speakers!
Last but not least Adriano Gigante on the use of blue light to treat Pseudomonas ear infections in dogs! I'm expecting lots of dog pictures... #EastMidsAMR
Lots of issues with the metaphors being used, e.g. desensitised, "silence" risks reducing risk perception and lack of nuance. Novel, unique and consistent metaphors needed. Really fascinating talk!! #EastMidsAMR
Next up we have @evakrockow.bsky.social on the use of metaphors in discussing AMR with the public. Really interesting the themes used to describe AMR in a wide range of media, including "war" and "apocalypse". Lack of thinking outside of the box and using new metaphors, inconsistent #EastMidsAMR
Phage and Bdellovibrio can be combined to treat E. coli! #EastMidsAMR
Final session at #EastMidsAMR kicked off by Laura Hobley and Robert Atterbury on phage and predatory bacteria to combat AMR. Demonstrate of success in treating polymicrobial infections with phage with no impact on gut microbiome. Also the promise of Bdellovibrio treatment!
It's all to play for with one more coffee break to go!
See if you can beat these ๐

The next speaker is Will Thompson from the Microbiology Society on their Knocking Out AMR initiative and the current AMR policy landscape in the UK and globally. Lots of commitment to AMR, which will hopefully be backed up by funding. tinyurl.com/5d8cdenx #EastMidsAMR
It's been a busy lunch time session at #EastMidsAMR #AMR #WAAW24 with lots of movement on the score board

"Old" resistance genes became more prevalent in ST131 post 2014 compared to pre 2000. Likely linked with F type plasmids and gene cassettes. #EastMidsAMR
Why is ST131 so successful? Using pangeome analysis and tracking alleles, identifying a significant increase in core and accessory allelic similarity in phylogroup B2 between pre 2000 and post 2014 datasets. #EastMidsAMR
Lunch was incredible with huge cakes and time to settle in for @lillycummins.bsky.social keynote talk, on the genomics relics of MDR lineages of E. coli. #EastMidsAMR
We've got scores on the doors for our BUZZ wire game ๐
Check out the prizes on offer ๐

Grant pitches now, we hope these will generate more collaboration between groups across the region as well as new ideas etc! #EastMidsAMR
East Midlands AMR Network Programme projected on a board in a seminar room
Excited to be in Nottingham for the first #EastMidsAMR ready to hear about all things AMR
Next up is Rebecca Ojo who has been looking at antimicrobial potential of prophages from H. pylori. First taking a bioinformatic approach to identifying prophages from sequenced genomes #EastMidsAMR
First talk is by Parvati Iyer, PhD student at the University of Nottingham. Parvati is speaking on the role of triclosan in stringent response induced antibiotic tolerance in S. aureus #EastMidsAMR
Ok, it's finally here, the 1st #EastMidsAMR conference. Really looking forward to a day full of AMR talks, grant pitches, policy and networking. Hoping it goes well and allows us to be more cohesive in our approach to AMR research in the East Midlands
