A comparison of mobility flow data that has not been edge-bundled (left) and that has been edge-bundled (right). Edge bundling is a technique where lines going to similar directions are bundled together to improve visual clarity and reduce clutter in visualisations. The left image shows 2 million flows going across Europe and looks like a green hairy ball, whereas the right image shows the same data bundled together to improve visual interpretability.
To support using this data, we have also developed an #EdgeBundling tool to aid in visualising complex origin-destination flow data:
