Congratulations on your 100th birthday today, Dick Van Dyck. You're such an inspiration for #ElderWorkers, to keep going...and keep singing and dancing. As he says "A hundred isn't enough!" #DickVanDyck

Mark Carney at the Council on Foreign Relations today answered a question about the aging workforce. In the whole interview, the question is near Minute 31. He outlines steps to maximize participation of all workers. I hope he follows through for #ElderWorkers.

I'm not a fan of "retiring" but I like the way Peter Mansbridge pictures "retirement". Peter was a respected anchor for #CBC and is now promoting CHIP. But It's the message about "retiring retirement" that has my vote for #ElderWorkers.

Dr. Eric Topol's new book "Super Agers" has 464 pages. But here's a short #PBS video that covers some of the tips for increasing your "healthspan". A lot of them will be familiar to #ElderWorkers, such as being active and mentally agile. So let's keep working!

Always good to recognize people who have made their mark, and continue to do so well into the 80s. There are #ElderWorkers everywhere making small significant differences in their own corners of the world. And then there are the stars.
Harvard Health has weighed in on the topic of #Longevity. They say that "the greater the frequency of socialization, the greater the likelihood of living longer". I'm sure that socialization at work counts, which works well for #ElderWorkers.

Following on the theme of longevity (which is a main requirement for #ElderWorkers), I found a list of 18 tips for having a longer life from @webmd.com and although it's a good, sensible list, I'd like to add a 19th... Keep Working!!

"Scientists agree that the upper age of life expectancy is currently well beyond 100 years." That's news from Insights, and of course the question will soon be: What are we going to do with all that time? Well #ElderWorkers have that figured out.

Define your personal brand. What does that mean, exactly? It's just one of the strategies for finding work that may be unfamiliar to #ElderWorkers. Let's face it, hunting for work these days is not the same as it was a generation ago, so let's learn from experts.

Here's a wonderful idea! This couple didn't retire, they bought a Bed and Breakfast business instead. This is an inspiring plan for other #ElderWorkers who are not ready to hang up their spurs just yet.

As it's July 1, Canada Day, let's celebrate Canadian employers who value their older workers, including #ElderWorkers. Yet another way Canada is leading the world by example! #Canada

Decent work. What a perfect descriptor for the kind of work #ElderWorkers want to do. Decent work is mentioned in the UN Report that sets goals for 2030 re older persons, and although it's not defined I'm sure it's based on values like respect, kindness, self-worth.

"AI might be powerful, but it cannot replicate or truly understand all the experience you have gained over years of firsthand encounters and interactions." That's the advice to #ElderWorkers from Harvard Business Review. Augment your irreplaceable skills! @hbr.org

So, If older people keep working, will they take jobs away from youth? NO! #ElderWorkers don't want the jobs that young people seek. According to the research, young people want chances for promotion, travel for work, regular hours... No. Been there, done that, thanks.

According to Investopedia, FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. It's based on extreme savings while building a nest-egg for retirement. But #ElderWorkers could use FIRE to build a nest-egg and then NOT retire. Good idea?

UN research tells us: "By 2080, people aged 65 and over will outnumber children under 18." Let's hope that those older people are #ElderWorkers. That's the best way to help the planet, and ensure world economies keep growing. And think of the fun we'll have!

A good message for #ElderWorkers who hesitate to name ageism when they see it.
Working at 87 to save money for his actual old age? Great attitude that all #ElderWorkers could adopt! Enjoy this story of determination in the face of rejection, grace in accepting reality, and appreciation of chances to work.

While I applaud the main message that aging doesn't mean slowing down, I'd like to add to the other message -- that the solution for active older people is to volunteer. Volunteering is wonderful. But working is just as wonderful, with additional tangible rewards added. Go #ElderWorkers.
Women #ElderWorkers are reported as having to live with more ageism in the workplace.

Forbes reports "AARP found that 74% of people over the age of 50 believe their age will be viewed negatively by hiring managers and it poses a barrier to landing a new job." As #ElderWorkers, let's work together to lower that barrier. #Forbes #AARP

Thanks for sharing this article, which shines a light on the issues facing the elders of the LGBTQ+ community. It strengthens my belief that meaningful work is one solution to the kind of isolation the article describes, and encourages me to keep advocating for #ElderWorkers.
"Older persons make substantial contributions to the economy through participation in the formal or informal
workforce (often beyond retirement age)..." Too bad this conclusion is buried in a UN report and the #ElderWorkers are not commonly appreciated.

My last post focused on how AI might discriminate against older workers (bsky.app/profile/elde...) and one tip from Nitin Deckha to counter that is to develop "uniquely human skills". 10 skills are listed and many of them will resonate for #ElderWorkers.

AI models used in recruitment and hiring may favour younger workers. That's the conclusion by the UK's HRDirector, based on research they've gathered. So the message to #ElderWorkers is that we have to be strategic in the job search. Watch for some tips soon.

I hope that time was devoted to considering ways in which seniors and older workers can be helped to gain and maintain digital citizenship. #ElderWorkers have much to contribute, and to teach, but are often marginalized. Let's include elders in the search for solutions in this digital age.
Why did I flag William Shatner (bsky.app/profile/elde...) and Ursula von der Leyen (bsky.app/profile/elde...) as successful #ElderWorkers? Each followed their passions, and while not always good advice for youth, this shows older workers succeed when they do what they love:

After posting about other #ElderWorkers for a while, I think it's time to talk about why I also continue to work beyond the "usual" retirement age. The first of 10 reasons is that I love working with creative people. And creative people love to work too.

Retired & Extremely Dangerous! That's Helen Mirren's character in RED, a movie about retired black-ops agents back on the job. Not a career move for all #Elderworkers but fun seeing favourite stars who've STILL GOT IT.
