Ontario Residents Advised to Conserve Electricity as Heat Wave Sets In
Ontario is currently enduring a significant heat wave, with high temperatures and humidity expected throughout the week. Environment Canada forecasts temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius, with humidex values amplifying the perceived heat. To prevent stress on the province’s power grid, the Independent Electricity System Operator is advising residents to conserve electricity during peak demand periods.
A program called Peak Perks offers incentives for participation in electricity conservation efforts. Enrolling in Peak Perks provides an initial $75 virtual prepaid Mastercard, with an additional $20 Mastercard awarded annually for continued involvement.
Homeowners can also explore the Home Renovation Savings Program, which offers a $75 rebate for installing a smart thermostat. Furthermore, Save on Energy’s affordability program provides eligible residents with a free smart thermostat. Enercare customers who participate in Peak Perks may receive an additional $75 through Enercare’s Matching Program. Reliance customers are also eligible for a $75 enrollment bonus and a $20 annual reward through the Reliance—Peak Perks Matching Program.
Peak Perks has gained considerable traction, now boasting 250,000 participants. In the summer of 2024, the program was activated nine times, contributing to an estimated peak demand reduction of 187 MW. With the program’s growing popularity, officials anticipate exceeding a 200 MW peak demand reduction this summer. For details on eligibility and program specifics, visit saveonenergy.ca.
