#Horse goddess #Epona was the only #Celtic deity to have an official holiday on the #Roman calendar. #Eponalia was celebrated December 18th w/ a day of rest for all horses, donkeys & mules.

As far as I can tell, the 1st publication to use "Eponalia" is "The Wicca Book of Days" (Dunwich, 1995). While it is a sensible analogy to Saturnalia and Opalia (the days before and after), the Guidizzolo fragment writes out "Saturnalia," but leaves the next day as just "Epone".

December 18 is #Eponalia, the festival of #Epona (equivalent, perhaps, to Rosmerta; Rigantona; Rhiannon; Macha), Gaulish goddess of sovereignty & fertility, protector of horsemen & horses.
So popular was Epona that she was the only Celtic goddess incorporated into Roman worship across the empire.
