🌊 Hoy comienza #EqualSea en Menorca.
Una semana de trabajo de campo en la cual nos enfocaremos en cómo lograr una conservación marina más equitativa para las comunidades locales que viven y dependen del mar.
What have we learned from the #EqualSea project?

Goat Island Marine Reserve at night
The value of a marine protected area goes beyond economics, like fish biomass or tourist visits. It also lies in its natural essence: the beauty of the seascape, the sound of waves, and moonlight reflecting on the sea. These elements shape identity, well-being, and our bond with the ocean.

Understanding these dimensions of equity helps us design marine policies that are not only effective—but legitimate and enduring.

Their insights are essential to building an inclusive vision for the future of Rapa Nui’s oceans 🌊
These conversations, central to #EqualSea, reveal the deep ties between culture, ocean stewardship, and daily life on the island.
As part of #EqualSea and in partnership with the Koro Nui O Te Vaikava, we have conducted interviews with a wide range of key actors: members of the Rapa Nui Indigenous community, local managers, scientists, artisans, shellfish gatherers, and educators.

We are making strong progress in our #EqualSea project on Rapa Nui. Working closely with the Koro Nui O Te Vaikava (Council of the Sea).
Today we begin EqualSea fieldwork in Rapa Nui.
We’re co-developing a new framework for ocean equity—identifying drivers of social tipping points and tracking progress toward fairer ocean governance for local communities and global actors alike.

EqualSea Marae Moana findings invitation poster.
Equity isn’t abstract. It’s about who gets to decide, who benefits, and whose knowledge counts.
At our public talk in Rarotonga (27 March 2025), we’ll share findings and keep the conversation going.
Everyone’s voice matters.

What does ocean equity mean in places where the ocean is everything?
In Oct 2024, the EqualSea project visited the Cook Islands—Mangaia, Rarotonga, and the Marae Moana Marine Park—to listen, learn, and share knowledge on fairness in marine protection.
