Currently caramelizing about 10 pounds of onions (a caterer friend had an extra bag).

This weekend I've also put up:

4 lbs of the chestnuts we picked at the orchard
2 dozen half-pints of apple butter
1 dozen pints of apple sauce
1 dozen pints of apple pie filling
6 pints of raspberry jam

I […]

Today is a #baking day and we're focusing on #biscuits!

Mine kinda lean here and there but at least they've always got a good rise and a good flake. I don't think my foremothers would turn up their noses at these.

Most of today's batch is getting turned into […]

Just cancelled the Zoom plan I kept on tap for work meetings and it felt SO satisfying.

With Jitsi feeling more and more mature and integration in Nextcloud lookin' real nice, it's just so fantastic to be able to switch to something less awful than Zoom.

And after seeing how well LibreSign […]

Hey community!

Who here has experience freezing home-baked bread without utilizing single-use plastic? I'm doing a bunch of make-ahead baking for the coming months.

I've not been very satisfied with silicon alternatives and I've read some folks who use linen bags. Does that really work?? […]

Life placed a very large sack of heavily discounted lemons into my shopping cart this week and instead of lemonade I have no choice but to get out my canner and make a ginormous amount of vegan lemon curd tomorrow.

So at least I've got that going for me.

Today is fridge-clean day! Among the treasures: a bag of bird eye peppers and some lemongrass stalks. I don't have a plan for them anymore and I don't want to waste them! So we're pickling.

2tbsp kosher salt in a quart of water, boil and let cool a bit […]

There's *really* good reasons to garden these days - and a small raised bed is a solid way to start.

My main reason? I never feel right in my heart unless I have a garden. My life has been nothing but upsets and moves since I transitioned. I've missed growing things.

Now that I've settled […]

Felt froggy and got our raised beds set up with my daughter this morning! Went a little overboard on the design, but after years of using raised beds at other homes I''ve gotten pretty specific about what I want.

These are made of cedar (to resist rot a bit) […]

If jars don’t work for you, there are re-usable silicon bags and other alternatives. I use glass because it’s cheap (often free), easy to clean, and widely available. Whatever you preference is, it’s time to ditch plastic if you can. For your health, and for the planet […]

Consider good old-fashioned canning jars for freezer storage – they stand up well if you use a little common sense:

* Don’t overfill them – leave a full inch of space at the top.

* Let the contents freeze thoroughly before fully tightening the lid (to release air pressure).

* Thaw gently […]

One of the lowest of hanging fruit are all those plastic bags and plastic storage containers.

Glass is naturally food-safe, one of the most easily recycled materials and is also widely available -- jars and bottles can be had for pennies at thrift stores […]

This #EveryDayThrift is a multi-toot love letter to GLASS!

Hubs finally got me to read the research on the health and enviro harms of PFAS and microplastics. I didn’t want to -- I told him I had enough problems.

But he was right and I’m convinced.

It's HARD to get plastic totally out of your […]

One of the uses for all that parsley! Chedder-herb biscuits made with bacon fat.

I don't make bacon often, but when I do I filter and save the fat. It's magic! (Try making popcorn with it.)

Did you know that basically *any* good biscuit dough frozen? Just […]

An old bronze butter bell full of whipped herb butter.

Oh and here's that herb butter I mentioned. It's super easy and I make a little whenever I have a surplus of herbs from the garden.

Just throw a handful of minced fresh herbs of whatever variety you have a lot of into the stand mixer with a couple sticks of […]

A red bowl full of fresh chopped parsley surrounded by stems and uncut bunches.

Waiting for this week's bread to bake and harvesting the metric crapton of parsley my aerogarden produced.

Some will go into the fridge for general use. Some will be used to make herb butter. Some will end up in a new frozen biscuit recipe I'm working on […]
