One common power of these monsters/tumors is the ability to cause exhaustion, and put you at penalties. And, that sucks.

Having enough gold pieces to properly prepare to kill your monster/tumor isn't the only factor to determine victory, but wow does it help.

Different monsters/tumors are vulnerable to different damage types. Can't kill it with poison/chemo? Switch to slashing damage/surgery. That doesn't work? Time for unholy fire/radiation.
