Reina takes pride with every scar she receives on the battlefield. It means she’s engaged with a mighty foe, one that set her blood pumping. Even a mighty wound such as the nerve damage in her left arm is one she looks upon with great pride. After all she was nearly killed during that encounter, and yet she stood triumphant and lived. Most days she no longer feels anything in her arm. It certainly can be a struggle to exercise with an arm that refuses to be so easily budged. Yet seeing how muscular it is and being able to pull upon her bow fills her with pride, especially over comrades who fret for her safety and think she best retire from battle. Her, retire? Hah—not on her life! True she may never reach a level of skill when she was completely healthy, yet that does not mean she should deprive herself from the thrill of battle, the thrill of life. Her left arm has been extremely kind to her over the years; the best way to pay it back is to march onto the battlefield with an ardent grin on her scarred face.

Anxiety gnaws at Pelleas with the familiarity of one being attuned to any part of their body. He cannot help but overthink everything that is out for him, more-so now since becoming king of Daein. Is he competent enough to rule—how many lives will he send to their deaths; how can he be a king when he is so jumpy and easily cowed—where can the assassins hide, when will they strike, how will he be killed— “Pelleas, look at me.” Snapping out of his spiral he looks across the table to see Micaiah observing him with nothing but concern. He shrinks against his chair in shame. “My apologies—” “There is nothing to apologise about,” Micaiah insists with that wisdom to rival every living person. “You’re a friend in need; why apologise needing help?” It feels so foreign to him that someone wishes to help him, especially over mannerisms that he cannot control. His fears are rational, but his anxiety blows them in proportion and forces him to fixate upon them every waking hour. “Let us figure out what can help,” Micaiah decrees with a smile that screams she will not rest until he is comfortable. To say he appreciates her is the understatement of the century. A small hopeful smile blossoms on his face as he nods. “Thank you, Micaiah.”

El shoots up from her bed, drenched in sweat, hair—white as bone—in absolute disarray. Breaths heave in and out, drowning, struggling for air. Her head darts about to see where she is. Not the dungeons. She’s safe. She’s safe. Accursed nightmares haunt her every night. Try as she must to sleep she is too terrified to close her eyes. She knows no one will come to whisk her away for another experiment, and yet her mind thinks otherwise. Having a candle burning does nothing to assuage her fears. What is she to do? She… could go to father. But to admit her weakness and bother him over nightmares of all things… Yet she will not be able to sleep. There will come a time when she won’t be able to rely on anyone. So she gets out of bed and makes her way to father’s room. The door is unlocked, for why strike down a puppet ruler? When she enters she sees him sitting up and looking at her with nothing but concern in his eyes. “Did you have another nightmare, El?” She nods, embarrassment clawing at her insides. Her father lifts up the blanket without word, without any judgement. She moves towards it and gets under. From here she is able to fall asleep.

Mercenaries never tend to rest. ‘Rest’ as in just have a day to basically do nothing. No need to always be ready for battle, no need to train, that sort of thing. Shez usually needs to do something; she’s not the sort to do nothing—makes her physically uncomfortable. But she’s been feeling really fatigued these past two years. Arval’s power means she is prone to exhausting herself. Sure, everyone gets tired, but not enough to be unable to sleep most nights. Concentrating has always been a problem for her, but lately it has been exasperated to the point she always needs someone to repeat what they said or demonstrated. Even her memory has been patchy as of late; forgetting what her orders were just a minute after being given them, whom she invited for picnics, the lot. And the muscle aches… The constant muscle aches…! They can get so bad that it becomes a feat to swing her swords around. Her neck usually swells up too, causing her jaw to ache, ears to ring, and for a splitting headache to follow. Body is out to get her. So she’s pleased beyond words to have a day to rest. Lounging on her cot, snacking on whatever her friends bring her, and if her mind is clear read a book, now that is what she calls a rest day.

Parties are too noisy—can people mind who they’re bumping against—how does one function with the amount of perfume they dab upon themselves; are they not overwhelmed? Ivy stands stock-still as she is forced to mingle with the nobles of Elusia, to be kissed upon her knuckles, and to exist in such an overwhelming space. It is expected of a princess, just how it is expected that a human breathes to live. But why must she torture herself? She is a person, with needs and boundaries. She is not one to shirk her duties, but her health is on the line. Best to leave now, lest her standard overthinking causes her to spiral and have a meltdown. She informs Hortensia. For a second she feels guilty leaving her alone, yet her sister understands and even insists she leave for her sake. Despite the headache and unbearable din in her ears Ivy moves through the crowd, doing her best to not brush up against someone or catch a scent of their overwhelming perfume. When she makes her exit she can finally breathes. If father is to scold her so be it. She does not regret prioritising her health.
