The #AngolanWarOfIndependence began in 1961 on #ThisDayInHistory. Leftist/nationalist forces from #MPLA, #UNITA & #FNLA fought until 1974 (~70k people were killed), when a military coup in #Portugal toppled the #EstadoNovo dictatorship and announced the colonies would be freed.

A 13-year independence war in #Angola finally ended on #ThisDayInHistory in 1975 with the signing by most parties of the #AlvorAgreement. In it, #Portugal ceded control of the country, leaving #MPLA, #UNITA, and #FNLA to sort out Angola's future (with #FLEC and #RDL excluded).
