Newspaper clipping from The Brisbane Courier, 6 July 1875. After years of delay, the opening of the new General Cemetery, near Toowong, is an accomplised fact, the place being now, by announcement, available for public internments. We understand that it is the intention of the Government to declare the old burial grounds closed after the 1st of August. We believe one of the arguments in favor of the present site of the new cemeteries was its contiguity to the railway line; and it is to be hoped that the Government will, with as little delay as possible, make arrangements by which funerals could be taken by rail to the Toowong station, which is but a very short distance from the new burial grounds. The length of the journey from Brisbane by road is considerable, and funerals will be rendered much more expensive than at present unless provision be made for conducting them by rail, which would not only be a great public convenience, but to the Government a source of revenue.
