Tan box with the following written inside: “in the midst of all this monstrosity and sacrifice and terror and loss, there is still something worth fighting for.” This book is about radical love and seeing the value in all humans, even the ones that we consider monsters, villains and those that do not see us as human. There are letters/poems to so many in this book, the sex workers, the suicidal souls, the Johns, TERFs, JKR, to our younger selves, trans people and to caregivers... After each letter/poem there is a task to do, and each task is tied into the letter and honestly, they make the letter live in your hearts and heal pieces of your soul. The first time I read this book I did all the tasks but 2, the one for caregivers where you have to write down 5 things that you do for others and then do them for yourself for a week. Kai, hit hard with this letter and task because she made me reflect and sit with some uncomfortable aspects to being a caregiver that I often overlook, myself, and why I overlook my needs in care of others. I think this is one of the best books you can read to give yourself permission to find love in all humans and it challenges you to center & lead with LOVE. In the current world, this has been hard at times for me, but I am carrying Kai’s words with me. It also really pairs well with Loretta J. Ross’ book: Calling In, How to Start Making Change with Those You'd Rather Cancel. Where you get into more of the practice of calling in those around us and finding ways to connect with one another.

I re-read this for a work book club and I could re-read it 1000x more time. It is beautiful, radical, loving, challenging and will push you.

A woman is bent but not broken. Though she's bent nearly double as if to touch her toes, her dark hair hanging down, still her inverted face is turned to squarely face the viewer; and though her position looks uncomfortable, her expression is serene, her gaze direct. The image looks as if it might be made of cut crepe paper, its shapes very angular and overlaid sometimes crossing one another, such that the overlaid portions blend color and desaturate.
