Italy Approves Law Targeting Femicides with Life Sentences

HEAR HER STORIES • What happened: On June 26, 2025, Italy's Council of Ministers approved a draft law formally introducing femicide as a distinct legal category of crime. • Why now: The move follows national outrage over the 2023 murder of 22-year-old Giulia Cecchettin, a case that sparked mass protests and calls for stronger protections for women. • What changes: • Femicide will now carry up to life in prison under certain aggravating circumstances. • Faster trials and new protections for victims of abuse are also part of the legislation. • Government's stance: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated the goal is to "respond forcefully to the unacceptable violence against women. • Still pending: The bill now moves to Parliament for full approval before becoming law.
