‘Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black White & Red’ #4 Review: A Solid Finale for a Series That Could’ve Used More Color _Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red issue #4_ just released, bringing this mini-series to a close. The final issue is authored by Alyssa Wong, of _Doctor Aphra_ and recent _High Republic_ fame, with illustrations by Sara Pichelli. Issue #4 is a well-paced, grounded story that works very well by itself, but doesn’t break the mold. Issue #4 caps off Marvel’s latest _Black, White & Red_ experiment with more of the same story arc — Boba’s a badass. Boba gets hired. Boba hunts a target. Boba wins. Boba leaves. I can’t deny that the formula works more than it doesn’t, but I think it leaves this series as less than the sum of its parts. **Spoilers ahead…** Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red Issue #4 Cover by Ken Lashley Issue #4 centers on Boba’s hunt for a cult hero assassin called the “Shadow of Bri-Phrang” on the cutthroat world of Eriadu. Eriadu has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance in _Star Wars_ storytelling lately, including Wong’s stories set during the High Republic era. It’s a planet of extremes. Violence and high society clash in a cycle of pride and revenge between the aristocratic families and the people they rule over. Issue #4 starts with Grand Moff Tarkin’s niece, Sydna Tarkin. She won’t get the chance to be a villain like her uncle, as a masked assassin kills her in her dorm. The Tarkins hire Boba Fett to capture the assassin alive so the family can administer their brand of justice. Sydna Tarkin is assassinated Boba doesn’t seem to respect the Tarkins, but understands them intimately. They are like him. Prideful, violent, and focused on their family legacy. It’s a theme this series has been circling, but never quite touches on directly. Wong writes Boba quite well, nailing the exact level of speech from the man, keeping his dialogue mostly internal as he hunts for his target. Boba immediately finds that the people of Eriadu are siding with the “Shadow,” and believe that the ruling families of Eriadu deserve what’s coming to them. As he asks questions, someone takes a shot at Boba. The sniper is an Eriaduan bounty hunter, Raslin Grace, a returning character from the end of Wong’s _Doctor Aphra_ run. They are racing for the same target, and Raslin wants to see if Fett is all he’s purported to be. Boba Fett fights Raslin Grace This is where Pichelli’s art really started to click for me. It’s the perfect balance of fluid and organic movement and the hard lines and edges of Boba’s armor and weapons. While that doesn’t always pop in basic dialogue scenes, it shines with action. Boba’s movement is natural without bending his armor or looking like Iron Man, and he still strikes some iconic poses. Boba Fett searches for the “Shadow of Bri-Phrang” Boba continues his search and remarks that he’s surprised there aren’t more “Shadows” on Eriadu. War runs in their blood, just like him. Eventually, it boils over, and Raslin jumps Boba, saying he’s a better target anyway. While Boba is in this business for honor and money, those are things Raslin was born with. After the “Shadow” joins the fray, Boba evades Raslin and captures her alive. Boba delivers her to the Tarkins, where she is unmasked, saying it doesn’t matter what the Tarkins do to her now — she’s proven Eriadu’s leaders can be punished. Boba ends issue #4 by flying away, pondering the people of Eriadu and hunters like himself. Maybe they all deserve to pay for their pride. Boba Fett captures his target As a standalone story, issue #4 is one of the series’ best. Wong wrote a nuanced and thematic story that gave Boba a real internal question, even if he doesn’t grapple with it much. In fact, I think this series ended with its two best issues, penned by _Bounty Hunters_ writer Ethan Sacks and Alyssa Wong. Both comic veterans brought their A-game here, and it was great to see. I’m now left wondering who I’d prefer to write an inevitable ongoing Boba Fett series. That said, there are a few throughlines for this series that I’d like to touch on. Issue #4 is a perfect place to start. ## Final Boba Fett: Black, White & Red Series Thoughts: Boba leaves Eriadu Eriadu is a society raised for war, incapable of changing itself without bloodshed. That’s just like Jango, but not necessarily like Boba, who’s proven he can find a better way. I’m reminded of the Rancor from _The_ _Book of Boba Fett._ Just like _The Book of Boba Fett,_ this series also stops short of giving Boba a real chance to reckon with his nature. “What are we going to call you?” Authors can pose the question, “Is Boba motivated by honor or ego?” and audiences can wonder whether Boba will see himself in the Rancor. Will Boba give the beast a name and, in the process, identify his own nature? Both were bred for violence and forced into that role by masters and fathers obsessed with power, violence, and their legacy. But both this comic and _The Book of Boba Fett_ fail to answer that question, and Boba always returns to being an armored hunter, conflating honor and legacy with pride and egoism. _The Book of Boba Fett_ made it clear Boba is a chip off the old block and just like his father, Jango (something that Timothy Lawrence wrote about in his fantastic editorial from August of this year). But I would add that both series make it clear that Boba can be so much more. He can be a truly honorable man, not just a shadow of his father. Jango cloned himself out of ego and a desire to continue his own legacy. Cad Bane represented that same idea, and Boba gave into it himself in the end. Boba in the shadow of Jango So I’m left with conflicting feelings about this series, and how storytelling has treated Boba Fett in general. There were avenues to explore that would have given Boba real internal conflict, and I’m disappointed our authors didn’t take those paths very far, nor did they depict Boba at a different point in his life. All these stories are set during the Imperial era. To be fair to these writers, I’d be willing to bet Marvel asked for these stories to focus on this era because it cuts a more iconic image of the bounty hunter. And as I said at the top, I can’t deny that it works much more often than not. Still, I turned each page hoping for something more interesting. In the end, this entire series has a feeling of sameness to it because of the similar settings, conflicts, and look to our stories, which is only accentuated by the color palette. Boba can’t face his father’s clones The result is a series that flattens Boba’s character to fit into this mold and denies him the stories he’s owed as an iconic sci-fi character. While there are no bad issues, each story works much better when taken individually, rather than packaged as a whole. In the end, like Boba, this series has very little to say, and that’s a real shame. Even in the Imperial era, I believe there are more compelling stories to tell. How is it possible we’ve never had a story where Boba has to track down a clone or a Mandalorian and reckon with his rejection of both identities? Not once does Boba get to see that clones of his father, who were given less freedom than himself, were able to be more fully-realized individuals than he ever tried to be. They broke the mold, while he carries his father’s legacy like a burden. I, like many longtime fans of Boba Fett, know that he has more to offer than this. That complexity is not what _Star Wars_ should shy away from; it’s key to the franchise’s longevity. This galaxy is a broad tapestry, full of interesting, varied and changing characters. Let Boba be one of them. **Issue #4 Score: 9/10** **Overall Series Score: 7/10** ##### Colin Scharff + posts Colin is a lifelong Star Wars fan and researcher who enjoys diving deep into every corner of this weird and wonderful galaxy far, far away. * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ Review – ‘The Bad Batch: Rogue Agents’ #1 Brings the Batch Back With Fresh Rivals and More of What We Love * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ ‘Han Solo: Hunt for the Falcon’ #4 Review – Han Chooses What Matters Most as the Series Nears Its End * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ ‘Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black White & Red’ #3 Review: Boba Settles an Old Score in the Series' Best Issue Yet * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ Long-Awaited Story Update Revealed for 'Star Wars: The Old Republic'

Mark Hamill Apprehensive About Generative AI, Open to Discuss Likeness Rights for Posthumous ‘Star Wars’ Projects Mark Hamill was recently asked by _Variety_ about the future of generative artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and whether or not he’ll have to sign over his likeness rights to appear in future _Star Wars_ media digitally. _Variety_ asked Mark Hamill if he was familiar with the recent trend of GenAI-based fan films that feature a (usually) de-aged version of himself acting out dialogue and actions written by user command. His response was that he didn’t quite know what to think of it, but that he might just have to have some long conversations about the rights to his likeness: > “I haven’t seen [any of those fan films]. It’s one of those things where there’s a disconnect between the fan world and myself, in the sense that every actor does the job, and when the job is completed, they move on to the next project… It’s fascinating to see [this technology] develop, and I’m also apprehensive about how it will be used… It’s obviously hard to predict the future, but I guess I’m gonna have to talk to my family about if they want me to be in a _Star Wars_ movie 30 years from now after I’m gone.” The interview unfortunately did not really get into a discussion of how the process compared to Lucasfilm’s official efforts for their Disney Plus shows doing just that, with the key difference being that his actual consent and involvement are part of that process. It is well-known that James Earl Jones sold the rights to his voice as Darth Vader to Lucasfilm for the _Obi-Wan Kenobi_ miniseries, and they have since capitalized on those rights by using _Fortnite_ to have real-time non-player character dialogue in direct response to user commands – with this being one of the first major uses of his voice following his passing. For now, Mark Hamill says that he is officially retired from _Star Wars_ for the foreseeable future, CGI body double and digital audio double or not. His last theatrical outings were the three films of the sequel trilogy, along with a pair of televised appearances in _The Mandalorian_ and _The Book of Boba Fett_. ##### Grant Davis (Pomojema) + posts Grant has been a fan of _Star Wars_ for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. ‘Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black White & Red’ #3 Review: Boba Settles an Old Score in the Series’ Best Issue Yet _Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red_ issue #3 was released last week, and kept this series on a strong path, exploring Boba’s adventures during the Imperial era. Issue #3 features art by Juan Jose Ryp and cover art by E.M. Gist, as well as a new story by _Bounty Hunters_ series writer Ethan Sacks, who returns to writing Boba Fett with a similar penchant for vengeance. Issue #3 shows off some incredible artwork, while also boasting the series’s most character-centered story yet. Sacks hands in a great short tale focused on the effect of Jango’s legacy on Boba, and how far he’ll go to punish someone who shames him. **Spoilers ahead…** _Star Wars: Boba Fett – Black, White & Red_ Issue #3 Cover by E.M. Gist Ethan Sacks is no stranger to writing Boba Fett, or his father, Jango, for that matter. Sacks understands that Boba Fett isn’t just building his own legend and filling his bank account; he’s directly continuing Jango’s career, and was cloned for that express purpose. In almost every way, Boba _is_ Jango. Jango is a shadow Boba can’t grow out of, only live up to. And while Boba is indeed the best in the business, he wasn’t always, and that’s what this story revolves around. Issue #3 starts with Sacks immediately putting this central theme on full display. Boba fights his way into a meeting with an information broker named Sheraxx Quorsha, who’s guarded by a Sakiyan named Djas Puhr. While Boba dispatches the guards, Djas tells Boba he’s been trained from birth to be a superior fighter, something Boba knows well. Boba Fett fights Djas Puhr. From the first frame, Juan Jose Ryp’s art shines. The heavily detailed characters and environments have only a wash of reds and blacks that don’t overemphasize the palette. It’s textured, realistic, and really engaged me, mainly because it avoided overusing red as a contrast and instead let the detail be the focus. We learn Boba is looking for an old bounty of his, named Corm Vargon. The middle of the issue then splits time between Boba in the present day and Boba as a younger hunter, dressed in his Clone Wars-era armor and wielding Jango’s blaster pistols. Young Boba on his John Wick arc. In the past, Boba took a bounty from a fishmonger’s family who scraped together the money to avenge their son, who Vargon killed over a game of chance cubes. As bounties go, it’s a pretty moral one, and a young Boba was eager to deliver. In the flashback, we learn Vargon has an acolyte named Shriff, who tells young Boba that Vargon doesn’t obey mortal laws because he will “ascend” and live forever. In the present, we see Boba hunting Vargon, going to a monastery that appears to be a front for what looks like weapons smuggling. Vargon’s old acolyte, Shriff, is there and recognizes Boba. Young Boba meets Vargon and Shriff The story then pairs a younger Boba’s fight with Vargon and his guards, who are caught unprepared for the skilled young hunter, alongside Boba in the present. Now, his reputation precedes him, and many of the guards flee when they hear his name. In the past, Vargon got the drop on Boba, knocking off his helmet and exposing his face for the first time in this series, while Boba tells Vargon, “A Fett doesn’t beg.” Vargon recognized Jango’s name and told him he’s a stain on Jango’s legacy, letting Boba live with the shame as he “ascends” beyond Boba’s reach. Young Boba confronts Vargon In the present, Boba introduces himself as Boba Fett, heir to the legacy of his father, Jango Fett. Shriff says he’ll never tell where Vargon is — now that he’s ascended — but Boba notices a symbol on Shriff’s hand and brings it to a returning face, Doctor Aphra’s father, Korin. Korin tells Boba the symbol belongs to a breakaway sect of the B’omarr Monk order, the disembodied heads in jars that walk on spider legs around Jabba’s palace. They shed their physical bodies and attachments to the physical world to focus purely on enlightenment. This particular sect believes that, by doing so, they remove their earthly sins and escape judgment from the galaxy, free to live forever as new beings. Boba won’t let that stand. He tracks the sect to their home on Javeek, at the edge of the galaxy. Boba meets with Korin Aphra I love it when _Star Wars_ stories explore the various religious sects and orders that populate the galaxy. The B’omarr Monks are one of the freakiest, and a great tie-in for Boba Fett, who knows how they work, and will soon take up ownership of Jabba’s Palace and deal with the B’omarr Monks that continue to live on Tatooine. The idea that their philosophy could be used to legally and ethically absolve hardened criminals of their sins is a really fun take that I enjoyed. And as soon as Boba lands on Javeek, the art gets to take even more of a center stage. The planet looks stark, and is made even better because it’s wordless for multiple pages, accentuating the creepiness. Boba lands on Javeek Boba is confronted by a modified B’omarr Monk. He then starts blasting surrounding brains until the droid reveals he is Javeek, who falls back on his “old identity,” gloating that he could take on one more sin to atone for during his eternal life as a droid. Boba fights the monks in a terrifying close-quarters series of panels and uses _Slave I_ to wipe out the monastery. Boba jetpacks out, carrying Vargon with him, and blasts his brain in a final showdown. In Vargon’s final moments, Boba tells him the bounty was long expired; he tracked him down out of pride. The issue ends with Boba flying off, this black mark expunged from his family’s infamous record. Boba reunites with Vargon and the monks. This issue was great, and may feature my favorite art and story of this whole series. I loved that we not only saw young Boba, but got to see his face. Boba’s helmet coming off here feels like a violation, emphasizing the humiliation of the moment in a way that worked better because of how faceless and badass Boba gets to be in the rest of the issue and the previous two issues. While this series was not created with the intention of creating groundbreaking stories, more about creating visually striking artwork, I’m glad the authors have found small windows to make Boba Fett’s hunts feel distinct. In issue #1, he’s fighting multiple parties that want to use him to their advantage and getting out from under their thumbs. In issue #2, Boba treats a bounty hunt as an act of mercy, and here we get to see Boba’s core motivations on full display. Boba jets off, Vargon defeated. With just one issue to go, my main remaining gripe for this series is the window in which these stories are set. They are all set during the Imperial era, only breaking out of it during this issue’s flashbacks. I understand the artists want to capitalize on Boba’s iconic armor and imagery, but the stories then have to be fairly limited. His early years studying under Jango or working with _Krayt’s Claw_ would have been interesting, as would any story set after _Return of the Jedi_ that features Boba living with the Tusken Raiders. While he lives in his father’s shadow, Boba is his own person and eventually forges his own path. I hope to see at least the seeds of that character growth in our final issue, which will be released at the very end of the year. _**RATING: 9/10**_ ##### Colin Scharff + posts Colin is a lifelong Star Wars fan and researcher who enjoys diving deep into every corner of this weird and wonderful galaxy far, far away. * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ Long-Awaited Story Update Revealed for 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ New Clone Squad Concept Art Revealed by Dark Horse Comics for 'The Bad Batch: Rogue Agents' Comic Series * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ ‘Han Solo: Hunt for the Falcon’ #3 Review – Han and Chewie Finally Fight It Out on a Messy Trip to Jakku * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ 'Star Wars: Boba Fett - Black White & Red' #2 Review: Boba Hunts Bounties and (Accidentally) Saves Souls
