Good to know that I'm sneaking yet more ants into #FieldworkPodcast! The wood ants are already in there: bsky.app/profile/suw....

Shining Guest Ant sounds like a book by @laurenbeukes.com.

I'll also have to find a way to work this into the #FieldworkPodcast in due course.

Fieldwork: Why mosaic habitats? Increased habitat diversity supports increased biodiversity and increased bioabundance

Why do we need to create a variety of different types of habitats, and why do they need to be connected? This week's #FieldworkPodcast newsletter looks at the importance of joining up conservation and rewilding projects.

Fieldwork: Why wood ants? You might think ants are boring and quotidian, but they are important ecosystem engineers in their own right.

Ants might primarily be known for ruining picnics and stealing all the jam, but wood ants are crucial ecosystem and climate engineers, creating fertile soils and burying organic material in a natural carbon capture process.

Beaver releases into wild to be allowed in England for first time in centuries Exclusive: Government to grant nature groups a licence for release of rodent species after earlier setbacks

More beavers could be legally released in the UK as early as this autumn, after the government said it would grant nature groups licences for beaver reintroduction projects.

This is great news. Beavers are very good at recreating ...

Fieldwork, the eoc-sitcom podcast
Fieldwork, the eoc-sitcom podcast YouTube video by Suw Charman-Anderson

I had a lot of fun introducing #FieldworkPodcast to the folks at the RSA Engage event last night, and talking about what it is, why I'm doing it, and the topics I want to cover. My talk got a great reaction, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as they did!

Had an fab time this evening talking about #FieldworkPodcast at the RSA's event in Reading. Tonight was the project's first outing and it really emphasised just how much I love the project, and also how important it is to have a bit of positivity and hope around climate and the environment.

One of the most astonishing things I've learnt working on the Fieldwork eco-sitcom podcast is just how well we have, as a society, raised awareness of climate change and biodiversity loss. In the UK, 80 per cent of people are fairly or very concerned about climate change, and...

Hawfinches are fabulous birds – handsome, chonky and with a fierce bite. They're also one of the key species that I've chosen for the Fieldwork eco-sitcom podcast. Find out more about them here:

Fieldwork: Pilot script submitted to Sitcom Mission for feedback This is me, passing a major milestone

#FieldworkPodcast update, featuring one milestone passed, two competitions, and a bunch of reasons why I enter them. (It's not to win.)

Right, #FieldworkPodcast script (TV version) submitted to Sitcom Mission for the first of two rounds of feedback. Will be very interested to see what they say.

#FieldworkPodcast script has now been through a few rewrites. Gonna leave it a bit before I go back to it to polish further. And by 'a bit' I mean overnight. That's if I don't wake up at 4am with a stonking idea.

Finished the first rewrite of the pilot script for #FieldworkPodcast. Brought two characters together so that they could interact more, added extra jokes. Will see what @anaspene.bsky.social and @luehea.bsky.social think, then give it more of a polish before submitting it for official feedback.

... learning about all this, so what do I know!

I'm still doing background research for the #FieldworkPodcast, so if you'd be interested, I'd love to chat more.

This is one reason I'm writing the #FieldworkPodcast eco-sitcom – to help people engage with ecology, the environment and rewilding in a more positive way. So much coverage is miserable and disempowering, and I want people to see the hope and then act on it!

Second draft of the #FieldworkPodcast script is done, this the TV version rather than the podcast version.

Unusually for me, I'm actually really quite happy with it. Generally at this stage, I hate what I've written. Not sure if it's a good sign that I like it, or a sign of terrible hubris.

Fieldwork: Why hawfinches? The chonkiest and most elusive of the UK's finches, the hawfinch is as enigmatic and mysterious as they come.

I was first introduced to hawfinches by an ep of @iolowilliams.bsky.social's Trefi Gwyllt Iolo and fell in love with them immediately. After talking to lots of hawfinch researchers and birders, I am in awe how amazing these elusive chonks really are.

A potentially bat-friendly feature in a tree. I have no idea if there are bats here, but there might be.

Learning even just a little bit about bats has really made me look at trees very differently. Lots of bats roost and hibernate in trees, but they need features like woodpecker holes, cracks, crevices and lifting bark to hide themselves away in.

Fieldwork: Why bats? Bats are weird little wights, and I turns out I love ‘em

...to settle on four fields of study, one for each character, but didn’t know what they might be. So I did a load of general interviews about fieldwork fails until I heard the magic word: Bats.

So this is about why bats are cool, and why they’re a keystone species for my sitcom.

You know how when you’re out shopping for clothes or a new book and someone says “Well, what are you looking for?” and you really can’t articulate it but you know you’ll know it when you see it? That’s what doing the background research for Fieldwork was like. I knew I needed...

Literally just finished Isabella Tree's excellent book, Wilding, about Knepp so will be watching this with interest! It's not too far from here, so will be visiting at some juncture as well.

#FieldworkPodcast will contain a lot of bats, but... why? Of all the species I could have picked, why focus on bats?

I mean, look at this flying fuzzball. How could you not want to know more about bats?

I love a good plan, but how well did I stick to last year's plan for the #FieldworkPodcast, and what am I hoping to do this year? Tl;dr: Reasonably, and lots.

Lining up a new series of interviews for #FieldworkPodcast, with birders, rewilders and conservationists, for more background.

Is it possible to have too much background? I have to get a draft done by mid-Feb, so er, crap, possibly... I should probably also start writing, eh.

I'm enjoying Wilding by the nominatively determined Isabella Tree much more than Rebirding, largely because it's just so much more cheerful, despite dealing with the same issues and describing the challenges of having to close down a business to boot.

... there's a lot that's valuable in the second half. I came away with a clearer understanding of how important mosaic landscapes, with a mix of different habitat types, are, how desperately we need to control our enormous deer population, and how important insects are.
