John Boyega Simply Joked About Having Talked To Dave Filoni, Actor Repeatedly Said During MEGACON Panel To Be Clueless About ‘Star Wars’ Future
In another update to the endless saga of John Boyega being coy and ambivalent about returning to the _Star Wars_ franchise as Finn, it’s been widely reported that he asserted at MEGACON Orlando that he’s spoken to Dave Filoni about it. However, the actual statement may be a little overblown.
Our own Tyler Bradshaw was in attendance at the John Boyega panel during the convention. The topic of _Star Wars_ was raised repeatedly throughout the panel, he said, with the actor saying multiple times how he hasn’t been in contact with anyone at Lucasfilm since the leadership changed in January. Someone even asked about the Daisy Ridley-led New Jedi Order-era movie, to which he replied, “Is that still happening? I hope we hear something soon.”
Tyler was also next to someone who said into the mic “Get Dave [Filoni] on the phone”, to which Boyega replied, “I actually already have,” and immediately laughed it off. _ScreenRant_ reported on that last quip (and even _Variety_ picked it up), but the context throughout the panel seems to have been a much different one than what the single quote paints. Boyega, after all, likes to have fun with these things, and it sounds like he was being quite jokey — a change of pace for him, given his comments over the past few years.
Since the completion of filming of his part of the sequel trilogy, John Boyega has gone back and forth about whether or not he would ever want to return as Finn for future _Star Wars_ stories. When doing press for _The Rise of Skywalker_ , Boyega stated that he did not want to do a Disney Plus series, later stating that he wanted to try new things as an actor with different roles in order to avoid being typecast. Boyega also spoke up for civil rights during the tumultuous period of protests in 2020 before later **getting candid about his frustrations with Disney** during interviews. Since then, Boyega has had starring roles in films like _Naked Singularity_ , _Breaking_ , and _They Clone Tyrone_ , appeared in a critically-acclaimed role in Steve McQueen’s television miniseries _Small Axe_ , and has done voice work for Netflix’s animation anthology series _Love, Death & Robots_ and the upcoming movie _Slime_. He also has several other film appearances that are in pre-production or post-production, but fans have wondered whether or not a return to _Star Wars_ was off the table.
Worth noting is that John Boyega previously stated that he would consider a return to _Star Wars_ if J. J. Abrams or Kathleen Kennedy were involved, and that he did speak with Kennedy following him voicing frustrations over the creative direction of the character. Abrams appears unlikely to ever return to directing _Star Wars_ , while Kennedy has stepped down from Lucasfilm and is only acting as a producer on _Star Wars_ movies now, instead of studio executive. However, she previously hinted that other sequel trilogy alumni could appear alongside Rey in the forthcoming New Jedi Order-era project, stating that “It’s entirely possible to see some people come back,” when asked. Daisy Ridley, **who is set to star in the film**, has openly voiced her support for Boyega’s return, **just as he’s been supportive of Ridley and her movie**.
Unfortunately, no footage appears to have been captured from the MEGACON panel, so we are all going by attendees’ recollections of events. We reached out to Boyega’s reps but did not hear back with any clarification.
