Yesterday I visited an oak grove in Monterey that was hit hard by an oakworm infestation in 2017. Following a couple of fire mimicry treatments the oaks seem to be recovering nicely!

2/ Itβs become apparent that surgery, along with other #FireMimicry treatments, can successfully remove minor to moderate stem canker infections, leaving no signs of diseased tissue in or around the surgical wound.
The traditional limewashing of tree trunks also provides protection from beetles that spread disease. #Limewash, along with other #FireMimicry measures, clearly reverses oak mortality here in CA. www.suddenoaklife.org ππ²ππ₯π³π§ͺππ°π±π
The #FireMimicry protocol I've been following involves the application of #Limewash to the trunks of trees. But why haven't tree experts and scientists examined or provided evidence for or against the benefits of limewash, which is still widely used in many cultures around the world? ππ²ππ₯π³π§ͺππ°π±
Coast redwoods are some of the hardiest trees in CA, but are still experiencing dieback in many areas. So why wait until redwoods become sick to give them care? I've been proactively treating healthy redwoods with #FireMimicry and am seeing these redwoods get even healthier. #SaveTheRedwoods ππ²ππ₯π°π±
Dendroalsia abietina is a moss commonly found on the trunks of old trees in California. Here is an ancient, culturally modified bay laurel with a shroud of Dendroalsia on its trunk. Fire clearance (aka #FireMimicry) around oaks has some significant, unexpected consequences. This medley of time-lapse videos, each if which shows several hours of work per oak, when sped up, reveals a noticeable uplifting of the lower canopies, thus presumably aiding photosynthetic gains. ππ²π₯ππ³
