PhDone ✅🎓
Last week, I successfully defended my PhD @uni-bamberg.de.
As a first-generation academic, this milestone means even more. Endless gratitude to everyone who supported, challenged, and inspired me along the way.

i worked at mcdonalds, for a press delivery company, for a marketing research company and polished silver for an antiques fair (just for a week) before i went into teaching adults. students tend to think we were born as professors…🥸

Funny story: I was so unaware of academia I really hadn't heard of Cornell, almost until I applied there. #FirstGenAcademic
hello all #firstgen and #firstgenacademic folk! here's a fun story of how clueless i was: when i went to college, all i knew was that to do cool bio research, you had to get a phd. and that required lots of school. so i thought i was clever (you'll see in a minute why i wasn't).
i am reading EVERY single reply in this #firstgen and #firstgenacademic thread and realizing i didn't even know how big our community is. and it is one i am proud to be a part of and proud of all of you for being a part of. what a great use of social media to bring us together!
my heart is so full . there are so many #firstgencollege + #FirstGenAcademic folks from so many different backgrounds and experiences in a thread on my timeline. seeing all your smiling faces and hearing your stories reminds me we're not alone. we're a force to be reckoned with!
unanticipated bonus of starting a #firstgenacademic thread ... i get so many new ideas of great scholars to follow!
a member of my lab this week learned that being a #firstgenacademic was a thing. i don't usually do this, but can i get my #firstgenacademic colleagues and followers to say hello? i'd love to show them a thread so they know they're part of a wonderful, amazing community!
