The last step in the #FishOnRoof project as the #RegMombassa Skeleton Fish heads off to The Gallery at Tea Gardens for an exhibition over the Christmas/New Year season.
I am so happy that it will be seen and enjoyed in another gallery.
I've spent the day in bed sick, but #FishOnRoof has been popping off as people remember the 2000 Olympics

I still can’t believe some miserable nazi bastard complained that #FishOnRoof could be a danger to the public. Even worse, that the council took less than 2 hours after the complaint to try to get us to take it down. Look at its magnificence!

Fish On Roof – Exploration of the Skeleton Fish Motif in Reg Mombassa’a Art Opens in Coonabarabran It all started with the purchase of an inflatable fish skeleton on an online auction site. With no information about the lot in the auction listing, the buyer was taking a punt that their hunch was correct, and that this was a work of art by Chris O’Doherty (aka Reg Mombassa). The hunch paid off and after research it was confirmed that Skeleton Fish was indeed a Mombassa work; one of a dozen of his iconic characters that were made into giant 3D models to parade around the running track during the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing ceremony. After being seen by 2.4 billion people for around 20 minutes it disappeared into the back rooms of the inflatable manufacturers until it was auctioned off. “I bought Skeleton Fish (it’s actual name) because it is an amazing piece of art I knew it would make a magnificent centre piece for an exhibition at SPACE” says Allison Reynolds, curator of the Fish on Roof – Exploration of the Skeleton Fish Motif in Reg Mombassa’a Art exhibition. “Everyone who knows the work of Reg Mombassa will recognise the quirky cockatoo tongue, big fat lips, and dead stare. I don’t know how it didn’t end up in the Powerhouse Museum like a lot of Reg’s other Olympic stuff, but it is Coonabarabran’s win “. Celebrating 25 years since Skeleton Fish was last seen in public, Allison has built a small exhibition of examples of the skeleton fish in Mombassa’s work from the 90’s until now (an original linocut done in collaboration with Glenno Smith), videos, and a projected mural. The exhibition is described as bringing one of Reg’s background characters to the foreground for admiration. “Reg Mombassa knows about the exhibition and has written a piece on why Skeleton Fish and why skeletons in general. It’s been printed as one of the displays. He was also very generous with his compliments about what we are doing at SPACE which was just lovely”. Reg Mombassa is pro…
Someone wants to BUY #FishOnRoof ... It never crossed my mind that I would sell it. I was hoping other galleries would want to display it.

Just did another interview with media about #FishOnRoof - they wanted to know more about the troubles we have had, I hope they don't focus too much on that and look more at the good news part of a piece of historic Australian art in Coonabarabran
An inflatable fish on the roof of an art gallery - it is of no danger to power lines
So the nazis reported us to Essential Energy (main energy provider to the country) because they said #FishOnRoof was a danger to the power lines (?) Jokes on them because the inspector man LOVES the fish and thinks its super-cool. Suck on THAT nazis.

I have been quiet on the #FishOnRoof project because I have been doing a lot of not-so-exciting things
- writing blurbs and pamphlets
- buying hardware for the rigging
- Joining the library to borrow a fish butchery book
- making a website and qr code
- Edit video

text that says "I have always been interested in skeletons and find them both mentally and physically intriguing. Reg Mombassa AKA Chris O'Doherty 2025) behind the words are an opaque fish skeleton taken from Starving Dogs at the Doors of Civilisation (1993)
Well Reg has blessed me with his cooooool words about his practice to put in the #FishOnRoof exhibition and I am SO excited. Used them to get a flag (extract) and foam board (full statement) printed. Hope they arrive on time.

Crushing sinus infection is interfering with getting things done for the #FishOnRoof project. I am soldiering on. Spoke to the inflatable expert at Giant Inflatables in Melbourne who gave great advice. Emailed the local tarp maker to get D Rings attached

A large red tongue protrudes from an inflatable fish skeleton with big red lips and pointy white teeth
After looking the the gallery fascia, roof, verandah to make sure everything will work for #FishOnRoof yesterday with the rigger, today I have a call with an inflatable fabricator to answer some of my clueless questions about inflatables.

A poster for an art exhibition that says - On october 1st 2000, a 6 metre inflatable fish designed by artist/musician Reg Mombassa was seen by 2.4 billion people for 20 mintes. Then it disappeared ....until now. Fish On Roof. This micro-exhibition of the skeleton fish motif is Reg Mombassa's wor has been curated by Allison Reynolds and will be on in SPACE from the 1st Sept. until the 1st Oct 41 Dalgarno St Coonabarabran Inages of an inflateable fish with giant red lips, white pointy teethm and a protruding red tongue are in two corners
Well the #FishOnRoof marketing has started using this poster. I hope it piques the curiosity of locals, and the nostalgia of the certain-age-from-a-certain-place people.
Meeting again with the rigger today and doing an inflation and roof inspection

Today I am acquiring snippets of the 2000 closing ceremony video for the #FishOnRoof exhibition (thanks Camtasia) to play on loop in the gallery. There’s the fish that will be on the roof!

The inflatable won't be the only item displayed at Creative Mischief Project 1 - #FishOnRoof exhibition.
I LOVE #linoprint and I could not go past including a 1 of 20 print of 'Smoked Fish' variation on #RegMombassa's Skeleton Fish motif in collaboration with #GlennoSmith

Just back from meeting the rigger/contractor who will be helping me with the #FishOnRoof external installation (see bad Gimp artist's impression).
Sadly it is raining and so plans to blow up in the back carpark were thwarted.

Here’s the test I just did to see if all is well before we start.

I am doing a thing over the next month - which is part project management, part curation, ALL labor of love. I'll drag you along here because who looks back at unknowns doing things? Nobody! But you can join me in real time as I make this happen.
