To cross it without an invitation was a violation of the Great Laws, laws my siblings reveled in breaking. And me… I did not want to break; I wanted to belong. I smoothed the heavy wool of the coat I had stolen from a clothesline, tucked my extra long limbs into the shadows of the fabric, and waited. Inside, I could hear the clink of a teacup. I was at a limit—reaching a level of loneliness where the pain of being ‘other’ finally outweighed the fear of being destroyed. If I stayed with my family, I would wither in the cold silence of my kin, who knew only hunger and never names. I could feel my pulse, a rhythmic thrumming, slowly reaching the frequency of a frantic heart. I was ready to settle for the smallness of a life measured in minutes.

Across the street, Mrs. Gable sat on her porch, her fingers moving with a mechanical fluidity — over, under, loop, and pull — only to yank the lace free and start again. According to Tanya’s watch, the woman had been doing it for three hours. It wasn’t a grand, cinematic possession; it was a rhythmic, petty madness. The microplastics invited a thousand tiny, stinging resentments that manifested as repetitive, useless labour. There was no joy in it, only a hollow necessity, as if her nervous system had been hijacked by a faulty line of code.

The week has been busy with thousands of little things, and a very low level cough and cold, so while I did spend time to write and send out to a few magazines, I couldn't write something for #FlashFictionFriday on Patreon.

So here's a snip of the story that goes live in 6 hours.
