Supporters of radical friar #GirolamoSavonarola toppled the Medici to rule the #FlorentineRepublic, and on #ThisDayInHistory in 1497 carried out a #BonfireOfTheVanities, torching artworks, cosmetics, and non-religious books. #Savonarola was later excommunicated, hanged, & burnt.
